What Happened

A severe hail storm moved through Canton, TX, on April 4, 2025, with a peak confirmed hail size of 2.5 inches and a line of verified hail reports through the afternoon. The storm produced repeated NWS alert areas from 2:27 PM CDT through 3:52 PM CDT, with confidence ranging from dual-polarization radar to radar and spotter verification.

The first alert came at 2:27 PM CDT with 1-inch hail detection from dual-polarization radar. Eight minutes later, a 2.5-inch report was verified by radar and a spotter at 2:35 PM CDT. Additional verified alerts followed at 2:37 PM, 2:40 PM, 3:07 PM, 3:08 PM, and 3:19 PM CDT, with hail sizes between 1 and 1.5 inches. Radar-derived detections also flagged 2-inch hail at 2:42 PM CDT, 1.75-inch hail at 3:04 PM CDT, and another 1-inch hail report at 3:52 PM CDT.

By mid-afternoon, the storm was producing more than hail. At 3:17 PM CDT, spotters reported an EF-0 tornado east of Canton near CR 1321, then moving northeast toward Grand Saline before lifting north of Silver Lake. The report included roof and porch damage on a mobile home near FM 1255 and CR 1605, roof damage on another home on CR 1701, and tree damage along the path. Later reports at 3:25 PM CDT and 3:28 PM CDT placed a tree on a house near FM 1255 and SH 110 and multiple trees down near FM 1255 and FM 773.

Damage Assessment

The field reports point to a storm that produced localized but clear surface damage in and around the FM 1255 corridor. Spotters documented roof damage, a tree on a house, a roof blown off a nearby home, and several trees down. The tornado report added structural damage on a mobile home and another residence, along with uprooted or damaged trees across the path east of Canton and near Grand Saline.

The damage footprint is concentrated in a few road intersections and rural properties rather than spread evenly across the metro area. FM 1255 appears repeatedly in the reports, along with SH 110, CR 1605, CR 1701, CR 1321, and FM 773. The observations include both wind-driven structural impacts and tree loss. They also show that the storm affected separate locations over a short window between 3:17 PM CDT and 3:28 PM CDT.

Radar and spotter data align on a storm capable of producing large hail and isolated wind damage during the same event cycle. The 2.5-inch hail report came early in the storm sequence. Later reports continued to show 1-inch to 2-inch hail detection as the storm matured and moved through the area. The reported tornado added a second damage mode in the same afternoon.
