A hail storm moved through the McLean, TX area on May 26, 2025, with the largest confirmed stones reaching 3 inches. The event unfolded from mid-afternoon into late evening across the broader warning area, with repeated hail detections and spotter reports filling in the storm path.
The first hail alert came at 2:24 PM CDT with 1.25-inch hail detected by dual-polarization radar. By 4:51 PM CDT, the warning area was still active with 1-inch hail confidence based on the NWS warning. Hail signals continued through the evening, with radar-derived alerts at 5:43 PM CDT and 5:55 PM CDT both showing 1-inch hail, followed by a 6:00 PM CDT report of 1-inch hail that was radar and spotter verified.
Field reports began to line up with the radar later in the day. At 6:40 PM CDT, a spotter reported hail up to quarter size along County Road X. Ten minutes later, another corrected report from Groom placed 2 to 2.5-inch hail on the ground at 6:50 PM CDT. The storm then strengthened again in the broader area, with 1.75-inch hail detected at 6:41 PM CDT and 7:04 PM CDT, both tied to radar and spotter verification.
The strongest verified report came at 7:52 PM CDT, when spotters confirmed 3-inch hail. Additional reports followed at 8:03 PM CDT with 2.75-inch hail and at 8:11 PM CDT with quarter to golfball-sized hail on the north side of Howardwick. Radar detections remained active through 9:52 PM CDT, when another radar and spotter verified report showed 1.75-inch hail.
The field reports show a storm that produced localized but real surface impact across parts of the McLean area and surrounding communities. The clearest damage report came at 9:22 PM CDT near Circle C Trail and Claude Highway, where a spotter reported at least quarter-sized hail along with window damage, gutter damage, and some vehicle damage. That report came through social media, but it matches the larger hail pattern documented through the evening.
Earlier reports point to a wider hail footprint. County Road X saw quarter-size hail at 6:40 PM CDT. Groom received a corrected report of 2 to 2.5-inch hail at 6:50 PM CDT. Howardwick had quarter to golfball-sized hail on the north side at 8:11 PM CDT. These reports show multiple points of impact across the storm track, not a single isolated burst.
The radar and spotter mix also shows repeated hail production over several hours. Alerts shifted from 1-inch hail early in the event to 1.75-inch, 2-inch, 2.5-inch, and 3-inch hail later in the evening. The strongest ground report landed near the middle of that sequence. Damage reports were limited in number, but the ones that did come in included vehicle and exterior component impacts, not just hail on open ground.
Power issues were also reported in the broader storm environment. At 9:30 PM CDT, Yoakum County Sheriff’s Office reported outages in Plains due to thunderstorm winds. That report sits outside the hail focus, but it adds another field note from the same storm period.

Try the Free Demo →This event produced a multi-hour hail corridor with changing stone sizes across the warning area. Crews should treat the McLean, Groom, Howardwick, and Claude Highway corridors as separate inspection targets rather than one uniform impact zone. The reports show different hail sizes at different times and locations, which usually means scattered roof, siding, and vehicle claims instead of a clean, continuous damage line.
Start with the spots tied to the clearest field reports. County Road X had quarter-size hail. Groom reached 2 to 2.5 inches. Howardwick reached golfball size. Circle C Trail and Claude Highway had hail plus window, gutter, and vehicle damage. Those are the locations most likely to produce immediate customer calls, especially where vehicles were exposed and soft metals took the brunt of the hail.
Document time stamps carefully. The hail pattern changed from smaller stones early to larger verified stones later, with the peak verified report at 7:52 PM CDT. That timing can help separate the first impact area from later, more severe hail tracks. Roof checks in this event should include shingle bruising, granule loss, soft metal dents, window screens, gutters, and vehicle damage, especially on properties closer to the verified report points.
