A severe hail storm moved through Tolna, North Dakota, on June 28, 2025, producing verified 2.5-inch hail and a long run of warning-area alerts through the afternoon and evening. Field reports in the Tolna metro and nearby corridors documented hail growth from quarter size to half-dollar size, then to golf ball size in the broader storm track.
The first alert in the series came at 3:11 PM CDT with 1.5-inch hail confidence from dual-polarization radar. A spotter report at 3:20 PM CDT described hail beginning at quarter size and reaching half-dollar size over about 10 minutes. At 3:30 PM CDT, another photo-based report estimated the largest stone at almost golf ball size, with irregular, jagged stones noted in the observation.
Additional alerts followed at 3:19 PM, 3:34 PM, 4:11 PM, and 4:31 PM CDT, holding the storm in a sustained severe hail mode. Radar-based detections increased again by 4:49 PM and 5:07 PM CDT at 1.75 inches. The peak radar-derived alert came at 5:13 PM CDT with 2.5-inch hail confidence.
Spotter reports continued to match the hail core. At 5:05 PM CDT, a tape-measure photo shared on social media supported a 1.5-inch report. At 5:14 PM CDT, a gas station callout in Lancaster described lots of hail near 1 inch. At 5:40 PM CDT, a social media report from Interstate 29 between mile marker 85 and Fargo described quarter-size hail and zero visibility in the thunderstorm.
The storm remained active into the evening. Radar and spotter-verified alerts continued at 6:21 PM, 6:51 PM, 7:03 PM, 7:16 PM, 7:55 PM, 8:10 PM, and 8:24 PM CDT, with hail sizes ranging from 1 inch to 1.75 inches and a late report of 1.25-inch hail from mPING and ICECHIP at 8:24 PM CDT.
The field reports point to a concentrated hail swath with mixed but repeatable impacts across the warning area. Reports from the Tolna area and nearby stops mentioned quarter-size hail, half-dollar hail, and one account of almost golf ball-sized stones. The June 28 sequence also included multiple reports of tree branches down, along with a hail and visibility report on Interstate 29 that described conditions severe enough to reduce sight lines to zero in the core of the thunderstorm.
The surface impact was not uniform. One report at 4:15 PM CDT noted quarter-size hail and said more hail fell west of that location, though the larger size was not known there. Another report from 5:20 PM CDT also mentioned a few tree branches down. These observations line up with a storm that produced stronger hail cores in pockets rather than across every point in the warning area.
The verified field sizes stayed close to the radar trend. A 1.25-inch report at 3:20 PM CDT, a 1.75-inch report at 3:30 PM CDT, and a 1.5-inch tape-measure photo at 5:05 PM CDT all fall within the storm’s larger severe hail cycle. Later evening reports at 8:24 PM CDT returned a consistent 1.25-inch hail size from separate sources.

Try the Free Demo →For Tolna and nearby roads, the main inspection priorities are vehicles, roof slopes, soft metals, gutters, and skylights. The hail reports point to a storm with enough size and duration to leave scattered dents, broken screen material, and impact marks on exposed horizontal surfaces.
Work the event in passes. Start with the locations closest to the 3:11 PM to 5:13 PM CDT core, then extend outward along the later evening track. The strongest hail signal sits in the middle of the event, but the report set shows smaller hail on the edges and another active period after 6 PM CDT. The field pattern suggests multiple inspection windows, not a single short-lived burst.
Prioritize the places tied to direct ground reports. Tolna, Lancaster, Interstate 29 near mile marker 85, and the Arthur and Valley City reference points all appeared in the report stream. Those locations are useful anchors for canvass routing, especially where social media photos, gas station callouts, and delayed reports point to overlapping hail exposure.
Expect variation by roof line and exposure. The reports describe hail large enough to affect vehicle panels and roof accessories, but not every address in the warning area received the same size. Field crews should separate direct hail-hit properties from nearby fringe areas and document time windows carefully. A late-day revisit is reasonable where the storm lingered into the evening.
