Lincoln, IL was hit by a concluded hail storm on April 3, 2026. The largest verified hail reached 4 inches, with repeated hail reports from mid-afternoon into early evening across the metro area.
The first alerts came at 3:21 PM CDT with 1-inch hail detected by dual-polarization radar and supported by spotter reports. The storm continued at 3:42 PM CDT with another round of 1-inch hail from both radar and spotters. By 4:05 PM CDT, reports held at 1 inch, then escalated to 2.75 inches with radar and spotter verification at the same time stamp.
Late afternoon brought a sharper uptick. At 4:50 PM CDT, hail of 1.5 inches was radar-detected while spotters also reported 1 inch hail. At 4:54 PM CDT, the storm produced 4-inch hail with radar and spotter verification. Additional verified reports followed at 6:28 PM CDT with 4-inch hail and at 7:01 PM CDT with 2-inch hail.
The storm produced 12 total alerts tied to the Lincoln area. The sequence shows a storm that held hail-producing structure for several hours and cycled through multiple hail sizes before and after the peak.
Hail in the 1-inch range can dent soft metals and mark siding, roofing, and outdoor equipment. The 1.5-inch reports increase the risk for cracked shingles, fractured vents, and damage to vehicle glass.
The 2.75-inch and 4-inch reports point to a much more severe impact zone. Hail of that size can break windows, crush roof coverings, damage gutters, and leave visible impact marks on vehicles, HVAC units, and skylights. In a multi-zone event like this, damage can vary sharply from block to block.
The 4-inch reports were not isolated to a single moment. They appeared more than once in the same storm sequence, which raises the chance of overlapping roof, vehicle, and exterior damage in parts of the Lincoln metro.
Start with roof systems, skylights, gutters, and vehicle claims. The hail reports ranged from 1 inch to 4 inches, with verified large hail appearing in the late afternoon and again in the evening. Focus canvass work near properties with aging shingles, exposed condensers, and flat roof edges where impact marks can be easier to spot.
Field checks should separate light cosmetic hits from functional damage. Ask for access to roof slopes, soft metals, window screens, and north- and west-facing elevations. Look for bruised shingles, lifted tabs, split seams, and concentrated strike patterns around ridge caps and roof penetrations. On vehicles, inspect hoods, roofs, mirrors, and glass for repeated impact zones rather than single dents.
The report sequence also supports staggered inspection timing. Some properties may show early 1-inch hail effects, while others in the same warning area may carry the larger 2.75-inch to 4-inch hits. Use that range when setting inspection priorities and estimating repair volume.
