A severe hail storm moved through Platte Center, NE, on April 15, 2026, with spotter-verified stones reaching 3 inches and repeated NWS hail alerts across the day. The first radar-detected hail signal came at 9:04 AM CDT, and the storm continued producing hail reports into the evening.
Early in the event, dual-polarization radar detected 1-inch hail at 9:04 AM CDT, 9:07 AM CDT, and 9:47 AM CDT. By late morning, the warning area expanded across a much stronger hail core. Spotter-verified reports at 11:51 AM CDT put hail at 2 inches, and an SPC report at 11:33 AM CDT listed 1.75-inch hail. Another spotter report at 11:35 AM CDT described all windows broken on the west side of a home.
Around midday, the hail signal remained active. NWS alerts called for 1.25-inch to 2-inch hail from 10:35 AM CDT through 12:52 PM CDT, while a 12:32 PM CDT SPC report marked 2.5-inch hail. The largest verified report came later, at 4:52 PM CDT, when a deputy-relayed spotter report placed estimated hail at 3 inches. A delayed 4:35 PM CDT spotter report also listed 2-inch hail, and a 4:48 PM CDT report included photo evidence of 2-inch stones shared through social media.
The hail alerts continued well into the evening. NWS warning-only detections tracked hail from 1 inch to 1.5 inches through 10:01 PM CDT, with a brief uptick to 1.5 inches at 8:19 PM CDT. The storm did not remain tied to a single short-lived pulse. It cycled through multiple hail rounds over Platte Center and nearby parts of the warning area.
Field reports point to concentrated roof, window, and exterior impacts in and around Platte Center, with the most specific damage note coming from the 11:35 AM CDT report of broken west-side windows. The 1.75-inch and 2-inch reports through late morning and early afternoon line up with that kind of surface impact.
The 3-inch report at 4:52 PM CDT came from a deputy-referenced account relayed through emergency management. That report stands out from the rest of the day. It followed earlier 2-inch and 2.5-inch ground reports, including an SPC hail report at 12:32 PM CDT and multiple spotter-verified reports around 11:51 AM CDT. The sequence shows more than one hail burst over the same area.
The radar and field reports also match on timing. Dual-polarization radar picked up hail early, then the NWS warning area kept issuing hail calls through the afternoon and evening. Spotter photos and broadcast media images later supported the 2-inch reports at 4:48 PM CDT and 5:45 PM CDT. The damage picture is consistent with repeated hail exposure rather than a single isolated burst.
For property owners, the likely inspection focus is clear. Check roof slopes, soft metals, vents, window screens, siding faces, and any west-facing openings where the 11:35 AM CDT window damage was reported. Inspect vehicles, outbuildings, and agricultural equipment in the same corridor. The hail size range in the reports was wide enough to produce uneven impact across short distances.

Try the Free Demo →Platte Center saw multiple hail waves on April 15, 2026. Crews should treat this as a multi-visit hail event, not a one-pass storm. The field reports span late morning through early evening, with the strongest verified stone size reaching 3 inches and several other reports at 2 inches or larger.
Priority canvass targets should include homes and businesses tied to the late morning damage reports first, then areas that collected the afternoon reports. Start with west-facing elevations, roof edges, garage doors, window assemblies, and lightweight exterior components. The 11:35 AM CDT window damage report suggests impact to exposed glazing should not be overlooked.
Contractors should also plan for mixed severity within the same neighborhood. The warning area contained 1-inch hail reports, 1.75-inch reports, 2-inch reports, 2.5-inch reports, and the 3-inch spotter account. That spread usually means some structures will show visible exterior loss while nearby properties need closer roof-level inspection to document granule loss, fractures, and bent metal.
