A severe hail storm moved through Mountain Grove, Missouri, late afternoon on April 16, 2026, producing 3-inch stones and multiple spotter-verified large-hail reports. The event generated a long sequence of NWS alerts and ended in the early evening.
The first hail detection tied to this storm appeared mid-morning, with the alert stream continuing through early evening. StormSnipe logged 70 NWS alerts associated with the system. Sixty-three of those were issued as NWS warning only alerts. Three were flagged from dual-polarization radar detections. Four were issued based on spotter reports.
The event produced multiple intense hail cores at different times. Radar-derived hail detections included 1.75- to 2.5-inch returns during the late afternoon pulse. Spotters submitted images and social media uploads around 2:30 PM CDT showing 2.5-inch stones near Eugene, and three independent spotter images at 2:39 PM CDT showed 3-inch stones. Observers near Success reported roughly golf-ball size hail at about 3:34 PM CDT. A field observer described hail falling for more than 25 minutes near Quarters around 4:01 PM CDT. Regional emergency management relayed later, delayed reports that estimated hail between golf ball and tennis ball size in locations northwest of Mountain Grove.
NWS warnings and alert updates tracked the main hail cores as they redeveloped and moved. Radar-detected returns aligned with the spotter submissions in the 2:30–2:40 PM CDT period and again in the 5:20–5:45 PM CDT period, when public photos and emergency management notes documented tennis-ball scale stones near Eugene.
Public photos and observer statements indicate widespread large-stone impacts concentrated in and around Eugene, Success, Quarters, and the Mountain Grove metro area. Multiple spotters provided time-stamped images at 2:30 PM CDT and 2:39 PM CDT showing stones large enough to produce visible surface coverage. Emergency management reports and citizen photos at 5:20–5:44 PM CDT near Eugene repeatedly described tennis-ball scale hail.
Reports from Success and Quarters describe concentrated periods of golf-ball to larger hail, including one spotter account that noted hail persisted for more than 25 minutes near Quarters. Those localized, prolonged pulses suggest repeated surface strikes in short succession across residential and agricultural areas identified in the field reports.
At the time of reporting, public submissions focused on photographic verification and size estimates. Survey-grade damage assessments were not included in the field reports submitted with these observations. Field crews arriving for inspections should expect localized concentrations of large stones where spotters and emergency management placed the heaviest activity.
Prioritize inspections in Eugene, Success, Quarters, and the immediate Mountain Grove area. Field reports and photos indicate the largest stones and repeated pulses in those communities. Start with a photographic perimeter survey of roofs, vehicles, skylights, HVAC condensers, and exterior equipment. Capture a measurable reference in every image and note the approximate time of the photo if available.

Try the Free Demo →Inspect roofs for shingle bruising, granule loss, and localized impact clusters rather than uniform wear. Give priority to the structures closest to the reported photo locations and to properties along the radar-aligned hail cores from late afternoon and early evening. For vehicles, document dents on painted surfaces and damage to trim and glass. Record each observation with a timestamped image and the nearest street or landmark tied to the spotter reports.
Schedule follow-up assessments in the hours after initial inspections. Multiple intense pulses were recorded during the event, which can produce staggered damage signatures across adjacent properties. Maintain clear chain-of-custody for photographic evidence and include observer notes referencing the 2:30–2:40 PM CDT and the 5:20–5:44 PM CDT activity windows when available.
Paid users can reference the Strike Map for the precise radar-derived hail track and exact strike locations.
