A severe hail storm tracked through Demopolis, AL late afternoon into the early morning of May 6–7, 2026, producing 4-inch stones and multiple spotter-verified large-hail reports. The event generated 40 NWS alerts and a mix of radar-detected and public-submitted observations.
Warnings began in the early afternoon with NWS warning-only notices reporting 1-inch hail near the metro. Dual-polarization radar later flagged larger signatures through the evening. A radar-detected 3-inch signature appeared around 7:11 PM CDT, and multiple NWS warnings between late afternoon and early evening showed escalating hail sizes. Public photos and local storm reports accompanied those warnings.
Public-submitted images showed baseball-sized hail along U.S. Highway 43 in Greene County at about 7:13 PM CDT. Spotters reported tennis-ball hail near Taylor Road by Eastchase Mall around 5:03 PM CDT, and ping-pong-ball hail in Forkland near 7:11 PM CDT. Earlier in the afternoon, dime- and nickel-size reports were relayed near mile marker 47 on US-80 and south of Demopolis during the predawn hours. The sequence of spotter observations tracks with the cluster of NWS alerts and radar detections that moved across the metro and adjacent counties from late afternoon into the next morning.
Dual-polarization radar and NWS warnings were both present in the alert set. Several warnings were labeled NWS warning only, while others were driven by radar hail detection. The combination of radar echoes and time-stamped public photos provides location-specific evidence of large hail along a corridor that includes Greene County, the Taylor Road/Eastchase Mall area, Forkland, and the Lock Five community.
Field reports indicate concentrated surface impact in multiple locations. Public photos of baseball-sized hail were taken on U.S. Highway 43 in Greene County. Two independent spotter reports from about 5:03 PM CDT described tennis-ball hail on Taylor Road near Eastchase Mall. Spotters in Forkland and near the Lock Five community reported ping-pong-ball size hail in the early evening. Predawn reports north and south of Demopolis described smaller hail, mostly dime to nickel size.
Observed impacts were localized to roadsides, residential yards, and vehicles along the reported tracks. Photographs and spotter descriptions show shelling and large, intact hail stones in photographed locations on U.S. Highway 43 and Taylor Road. Those same corridors were associated with the larger radar returns observed between late afternoon and early evening. There are no generalized damage claims tied to the wider NWS warning polygon; the verified surface reports remain concentrated where public submissions and spotter relays were made.
Inspectors working claims or preliminary assessments should expect the highest incidence of obvious hail damage in Greene County along U.S. Highway 43 and in the Taylor Road/Eastchase Mall corridor. Reports from Forkland and the Lock Five area indicate scattered, larger stones with clear photographic evidence. Reports from the early morning hours show mostly small hail with little photographic corroboration.

Try the Free Demo →Prioritize inspections in these locations: U.S. Highway 43 in Greene County, Taylor Road near Eastchase Mall, Forkland, and the Lock Five Community. Those areas produced the largest spotter-verified stones and the clearest photographic evidence. Begin with roofing, vehicle, and siding surveys where photographs indicate direct hail accumulation. Look for circular pitting in asphalt shingles, shattered skylights, dented metal fixtures, and concentrated broken glass on vehicles. Photograph each item with a dated, geotagged image adjacent to a ruler or other scale.
Document the time and location of the original spotter reports when submitting estimates. Use the public photo timestamps and spotter times as event anchors. For sites along the main corridor, expect intermittent patches of heavy impact rather than uniform coverage across a property. Focus on windward-facing exposures, vehicle surfaces left outdoors, and soft metals such as gutters and AC units in those corridors.
Safety and logistics notes: some reports originated on major routes during peak storm timing. Verify road access before mobilizing crews. Use daylight follow-ups where possible to avoid misidentifying preexisting wear. Radars showed elevated signatures during the evening hours, and public photos confirm large stones in specific neighborhoods.
