A severe hail storm tracked through Canadian, Texas on May 9, 2026, producing 2.75-inch stones and spotter-verified impacts in the early evening. The event generated a long sequence of NWS alerts and multiple storm-chaser and social-media observations.
NWS issued 48 alerts spanning 5:03 PM CDT on May 9 to 6:56 AM CDT on May 10. Early dual-polarization radar returns at 5:03 PM CDT showed 1-inch hail signatures. Through late afternoon and into early evening radar detections intensified, with repeated dual-polarization radar and radar-plus-spotter messages showing larger signatures near Canadian. Multiple NWS warning-only alerts were also issued along the path.
Spotter reports and public submissions tracked alongside the radar progression. mPING and Spotter Network entries near 6:19–6:20 PM CDT described tennis-ball sized hail along the Highway 152 corridor. Photos relayed on social media at approximately 6:20 PM CDT corroborated on-the-ground sampling. At 6:48 PM CDT a spotter reported tennis-ball sized hail about one mile east of the intersection of Highways 152 and 592 along Highway 152. Broadcast media storm chasers recorded the largest samples near 7:51 PM CDT.
The pattern combined radar-detected hail signatures with repeated spotter and storm-chaser observations. Alerts alternated between radar-detected values, radar-plus-spotter updates, and NWS warning-only messages as the storm evolved across the Canadian metro area.
Field reports and imagery show concentrated impacts along the Highway 152 corridor east of the 152/592 junction and in the immediate Canadian area. Social-media photos and multiple Spotter Network submissions captured substantial hail accumulation and collected samples at several points inside that corridor. Broadcast media storm-chaser reports at 7:51 PM CDT documented large stones within and just outside the city limits.
No formal monetary loss totals were included in the submitted field reports. Observations focus on on-the-ground evidence: collected hail samples, ground coverage, and time-stamped imagery. The clustering of spotter and radar detections along Highway 152 indicates a corridor of focused surface impact rather than isolated pockets. Several radar-plus-spotter alerts and NWS warning-only messages align with the times and locations of the social-media and mPING submissions.
Inspectors should expect concentrated inspection needs where multiple spotter reports and radar returns overlapped — notably along Highway 152 east of the 152/592 intersection and in areas documented by storm chasers shortly after 7:50 PM CDT.
Prioritize inspections along the Highway 152 corridor east of the 152/592 junction and properties inside the Canadian city limits that were within the radar-and-spotter overlap window roughly between 6:10 PM CDT and 7:55 PM CDT. Begin exterior assessments at the roofline and vehicle fleet areas where on-the-ground photos and spotter entries documented hail presence. Record photographic evidence with a scale reference and timestamps that match the local observation window.

Try the Free Demo →Expect concentrated surface impacts rather than uniformly distributed loss across the county. Check vulnerable elements first: exposed roofing materials, skylights, vinyl siding seams, solar arrays, and parked vehicle panels. For roofing, look for split granules, multiple isolated dents consistent with high-density hail fall, and embedded fragments. For vehicles, document clustered panel dents and broken glass with location-tagged photos.
Organize field teams to cover the documented corridor in grid-style sweeps and log each structure with a time and GPS coordinate. Correlate your findings to the observation times noted in spotter and storm-chaser reports to establish exposure windows. Maintain clear photographic chains of custody for collected samples and evidence intended for claims.
