A severe hail storm moved through Springview, Nebraska on May 17, 2026, producing 3.35-inch hail and multiple radar-detected hail cores across the NWS warning area.
Storm development began in mid-day and continued into late evening. The National Weather Service issued 68 alerts across the warning area between 12:46 PM CDT and 11:40 PM CDT. Dual-polarization radar tracked repeating hail cores through the afternoon and into the evening. Several radar returns exceeded two inches in diameter during late afternoon and early evening cores.
Spotters supplied ground observations that align with the radar picture. Around 8:09 PM CDT two independent mPING submissions reported golf-ball hail at 1.75 inches. Multiple spotter-verified reports recorded half-dollar size hail and quarter-size hail during the afternoon and early evening, including a quarter-size report from 85th and Western. A spotter estimate at 2:37 PM CDT recorded winds of 40 to 50 mph concurrent with hail reports. Social media posts and a time-stamped photo at about 7:10 PM CDT documented smaller but widespread impacts in populated areas.
The alert stream showed a mix of radar-detected hail signatures and NWS warning-only alerts as the storm complex evolved and shifted across the region. Radar-detected cores larger than an inch occurred repeatedly; spotter reports confirmed several of those radar detections.
Field reports and radar returns indicate concentrated surface impacts in the late-afternoon to early-evening corridor. Two independent spotter reports at 8:09 PM CDT recorded golf-ball size hail. Several mPING submissions and local observer notes logged half-dollar (1.25 in.) and quarter (1.00 in.) hail across multiple locations. The 2:37 PM CDT wind estimate of 40–50 mph increases the likelihood of torn or stripped roof edges and limb damage where hail and gusts coincided.
Reports tied to specific locations include the quarter-size observation at 85th and Western and corrected time entries for areas near 3 E Menno. Photo-verified social media submissions around 7:10 PM CDT show vehicle panel dents and concentrated shingle scouring in parking areas. Where spotters recorded repeated impacts, asphalt shingles showed localized granule loss and pitting in photos forwarded with observer notes.
Radar-indicated hail cores align with clusters of spotter reports rather than a uniform swath. That pattern produced pockets of heavier surface impact interspersed with areas reporting only minor or no hail. Damage reports to date are concentrated along the storm path identified by radar and observer locations. Inspectors arriving on site should expect isolated but severe impact signatures where spotter-verified golf-ball and half-dollar reports occurred.
Prioritize inspections in neighborhoods and sites along the radar-defined hail corridor and where spotters reported 1.75-inch and 1.25-inch hail. Start with 85th and Western and locations tied to the 8:09 PM CDT mPING submissions. Check vehicle lots, commercial roofing, and exposed south- and west-facing slopes first. Document roof condition with high-resolution, geotagged photos and include a clear scale or close-up of suspected impact points.

Try the Free Demo →Look for common impact indicators observed in on-site reports: concentrated granule loss on asphalt shingles, bruising and torn laminate edges, denting on metal roofing and siding, cracked skylights, and localized tree limb stripping where 40–50 mph gusts were reported. Use a measurement tool or calibrated reference in photographs to record hole diameters or depressions rather than relying on descriptive size terms alone. Where multiple impacts cluster within a single property footprint, record GPS coordinates of each cluster to support repair or claim work.
Temporary measures should focus on limiting water intrusion while preserving evidence. Secure tarps only after photographing damage, and avoid sweeping or hosing shingles where granule loss and pitting are present. Coordinate with property owners to collect time-stamped social media posts and spotter submissions tied to each address. For precise hail track coordinates and paid damage zone mapping, refer to the Strike Map.
