Rifle, Colorado experienced a multi-zone hail event on May 17, 2026, with a measured 4.33-inch hailstone recorded in the metro area. The storm produced a sequence of NWS radar-detected hail alerts through the late morning and early afternoon.
NWS issued five separate hail alerts across the Rifle warning area between 12:30 PM MDT and 2:07 PM MDT. The sequence recorded by NEXRAD dual-polarization hail detection was:

Radar-based detections showed consistent 0.75-inch signatures with a later pulse registering near 1.00 inch over parts of the NWS alert area. The measured large hailstone in the metro carries a higher risk profile: it can fracture asphalt shingles, compromise weaker siding, and cause concentrated impact damage to automobiles and rooftop equipment where the stone fell.
Field reports tied to this event indicate vehicle denting and broken irrigation equipment in residential sections of the metro.
