A severe hail storm tracked through Dannebrog, Nebraska, on May 17, 2026, producing 3.61-inch stones and multiple radar-detected hail cores during late afternoon into the overnight period. The event generated 130 NWS alerts and numerous spotter reports across the Dannebrog–Ashton corridor.
The storm sequence began in the late afternoon with the first National Weather Service warning at 4:11 PM CDT. NWS warning-only hail size estimates and radar-detected cores continued through the evening, with NWS alerts stretching from 4:11 PM CDT to 12:23 AM CDT the following day. Dual-polarization radar returns repeatedly indicated multi-inch hail cores as the system moved northeast across Phelps County.
Spotter activity and local storm reports provide key surface context. At 4:51 PM CDT, spotters near Ashton reported 2.5-inch hail. Around 4:58 PM CDT, multiple spotters corrected earlier reports and documented hail near Dannebrog and 1 NE Dannebrog in the 2.75–3.0-inch range; those entries are recorded as spotter-verified. Later in the evening, a series of photos relayed at 6:30 PM CDT and a delayed photo submission near 9:30 PM CDT showed 2.0-inch stones.
The alert stream combined several data sources. Some NWS alerts were warning-only estimates. Other alerts matched radar-detected hail signatures from dual-polarization NEXRAD, and multiple alerts were tagged radar plus spotter verified. The spatial pattern of detections and spotter reports aligns along a northeast-running corridor between Ashton and Dannebrog.
Field reports and on-scene imagery indicate concentrated surface impact north and northeast of Dannebrog and along the Ashton approach. SPC and local spotters submitted three corrected 3.0-inch reports at 1 NE Dannebrog at 4:58 PM CDT and multiple 2.75-inch spotter-verified reports attributed to Dannebrog at the same time. Photographic evidence at 6:30 PM CDT shows abundant 2.0-inch hail in multiple locations along the track.
Observed impacts tied to those precise reports include denting and puncture potential documented in photographer-submitted images of vehicles and agricultural equipment near Dannebrog. Spotter submissions noted broken glass and concentrated accumulation in low-lying yards immediately adjacent to the reported locations. Radar-detected cores overlapping spotter sites indicate the strongest surface effects were confined to a relatively narrow swath through town and the nearby rural grid rather than a broad area.
Reports do not show widespread structural collapse or catastrophic losses in town-level submissions. Damage appears focal and concentrated where spotters reported the largest stones. Contractors inspecting claims should prioritize the areas with multiple spotter-verified entries and photographed evidence: 1 NE Dannebrog, Dannebrog proper, and the road corridor toward Ashton.

Try the Free Demo →Scope inspections to the documented track. Begin exterior walk-arounds at 1 NE Dannebrog and Dannebrog addresses with spotter-verified reports from 4:58 PM CDT, then extend inspections northeast along the Ashton approach where 2.5-inch reports were recorded at 4:51 PM CDT. Use the photographic timestamps and spotter notes as location anchors when logging affected properties.
Document size evidence on site. Recover and measure any remaining hailstones with a ruler against a photograph and include the time and GPS location in the file name. Photograph vehicles, farm machinery, roof shingles, gutters, and glass from multiple angles. For roofs, pair exterior photos with attic checks to identify secondary water entry points tied to recent impact. Note whether on-scene imagery matches the 2.0–3.0-inch range observed in spotter submissions.
Prepare field estimates for concentrated, high-damage patches rather than uniform area-wide loss. Prioritize metal farm equipment, vehicular panels, HVAC condenser fins, skylights, and vehicle glass where spotter photos show direct impact. Keep records of witness statements and photo chains for locations that correspond to the 4:51–4:58 PM CDT report window.
For precise hail-track mapping and point-by-point radar hits, consult the Strike Map product to target inspections to the narrow swath of radar-detected cores and spotter-verified locations.
Address data is sourced from the US National Address Database (NOAA/USDOT). Inclusion of an address does not guarantee physical damage occurred. Confidence scores are radar-derived estimates. Data Accuracy Disclaimer
