Ozona, TX experienced a concluded hail-producing storm on May 22–23, 2026, producing peak hail of 2.59 inches and multiple radar-detected cores and NWS warnings.
A sequence of 20 NWS alerts tracked the event from May 22 at 5:15 PM CDT to May 23 at 4:51 AM CDT. Twelve alerts were supported by dual-polarization radar hail detections. Eight alerts were issued as NWS warning only. Radar signatures showed concentrated hail cores through the early evening and again overnight. Notable radar-detected returns included 2.11-inch returns at 6:11 PM CDT and 1.87-inch returns at 6:51 PM CDT on May 22. Additional radar-detected cores produced 1.71 inches at 7:50 PM CDT and secondary overnight detections of 1.52 inches at 1:24 AM CDT and 1.50 inches at 4:51 AM CDT on May 23. The NWS warning sequence began with a 0.88-inch NWS warning at 5:15 PM CDT and included several NWS warning-only entries interspersed with radar-detected alerts.
Hail sizes across the Ozona warning area ranged from roughly 0.75 to 2.59 inches during the May 22–23 event. Hail in the 1.5–2.6 inch range can produce localized roof shingle damage, dent metal panels, and crack skylight or vehicle glass where direct impacts occurred. Areas within the NWS warning area during the 6:00–8:30 PM CDT window on May 22 and the overnight cores after midnight saw the largest radar returns and therefore the highest potential for localized impact. Inspect roofs, vehicle panels, exposed HVAC equipment, and unprotected glass in Ozona and adjacent addresses covered by the NWS warning polygons issued that night.
Begin with safety and documentation. Verify scene safety before access. Photograph exterior conditions from multiple angles. Capture timestamps and approximate locations relative to Ozona landmarks or road junctions. Use a moisture meter for interior checks and document any active leaks. Prioritize tarping compromised roofs to prevent secondary water damage where shingles or underlayment are missing.
Triage repairs by exposure and occupancy. Residential properties with visible shingle granule loss, cracked skylights, or dented metal roofs warrant prompt temporary repair and full estimate. Commercial and agricultural structures with damaged metal panels or skylights should be assessed for fasteners and structural attachment points. Itemize material types, estimated quantities, and recommended permanence of repair. Prepare documentation compatible with insurer requirements and reference the NWS warning area dates and times for loss verification.
