The event unfolded across a 4-hour window of focused activity. NWS alerts began at 12:58 PM MDT and continued through 5:45 PM MDT, totaling 34 alert messages. Early dual-polarization radar returns showed 1.00-inch signatures at 12:58 PM. Radar-derived detections strengthened through the afternoon, with repeated 1.5-inch to 1.75-inch radar reports between about 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM. A radar and spotter-verified detection at 2:52 PM MDT registered the peak measurement of 3.04 inches.
Spotter networks supplied multiple surface measurements that align with the radar timeline. mPING observers recorded a string of half-dollar to ping-pong-sized stones around 3:02 PM MDT, and two separate mPING entries at 3:08 PM reported 1.50-inch hail. Around 4:21 PM MDT three independent mPING submissions each described hen-egg sized stones measured at 2.00 inches. A social-media post with an image at 4:34 PM MDT documented a measured 1.50-inch stone. Several late-afternoon NWS warning-only alerts tracked additional 1.00-inch to 1.75-inch reports as the circulation weakened.
Radar sources remained the backbone of the alert stream. Many alerts cite dual-polarization radar hail detection through the event. Several key size calls were reinforced by spotter measurements at the times listed above. The combined record shows episodic pulses of larger hail embedded in a longer period of radar-detected hail signatures.
Field reports and radar swaths indicate concentrated surface impacts in multiple neighborhoods of the Colorado Springs metro area during mid- and late-afternoon. Three identical mPING submissions at 4:21 PM MDT reported 2.00-inch hen-egg stones collected in separate locations. Multiple 1.25-inch half-dollar reports clustered around 3:02 PM MDT, and additional measured quarter-sized stones appeared near 1:11 PM MDT and 4:13 PM MDT. A photographed 1.50-inch stone posted to social media at 4:34 PM MDT provides photographic evidence of measured surface hail in the same late-afternoon window.
These time-stamped, on-the-ground measurements align with radar-detected hail swaths that passed over central metro corridors between the 2:30 PM and 4:45 PM time frame. Observers documented measurable stones at multiple points rather than an isolated single observation. Vehicle bodywork and exposed metal surfaces in areas with 2.00-inch reports are the most likely locations for visible denting and concentrated impact marks. Measured half-dollar and ping-pong-sized stones reported earlier in the afternoon correspond to widespread minor to moderate surface impact across the same transit path.
