A severe hail storm tracked through Dighton, KS on June 1, 2026, producing 2.04-inch hail and repeated radar- and spotter-verified hail episodes from late afternoon into the overnight hours.
The event began in mid-afternoon with a NEXRAD hail detection at 4:14 PM CDT and continued as a sequence of radar-detected and NWS warning-only alerts across the Dighton warning area. A total of 44 NWS alerts covered the storm through the overnight period. Dual-polarization radar detected several intense hail echoes in the late afternoon and early evening, and spotter reports later in the evening aligned with the strongest radar signatures.
Spotter observations recorded accumulating hail and white ground along Highway 40. At 7:19 PM CDT multiple spotters reported pea- to nickel-size hail along Highway 40 from County Road 260 at the Highway 25 intersection east to Monument, noting the ground was white with hail. Earlier spotter reports at 5:20 PM CDT and 6:35 PM CDT noted pea- to penny-size hail and accumulating hail at those locations. Radar and spotter timing indicate the most intense episodes moved through the Highway 40 corridor during the late evening.
Field reports show concentrated surface accumulation rather than widespread structural impact. Three independent spotters at 7:19 PM CDT described hail covering the ground along Highway 40 between CR 260 and Monument. Two earlier spotter submissions at 5:20 PM CDT and 6:35 PM CDT described accumulating pea- to penny-size hail in nearby sectors. Local storm reports did not include submitted observations of roof failure or vehicle crush, and no submitted reports described tree-impact damage.
Radar detections repeatedly flagged strong hail signatures over the same corridor where spotters documented accumulation. Those radar returns and the cluster of ground reports indicate concentrated impacts along the Highway 40 alignment inside the broader NWS warning area. Where spotters noted accumulation, ground-covering hail suggests shallow pooling and localized run-off may have occurred on low-grade surfaces and road shoulders.
Inspect roofs and exposed vehicles located along Highway 40 from CR 260 through Monument first. Spotter-verified accumulation at 7:19 PM CDT was reported in that corridor. Check for surface abrasion, bruised shingles, and dented metal on fleet vehicles or farm equipment that were parked outdoors near the reported locations.
Prioritize lower-slope roof areas and rooftop-mounted equipment. Accumulating hail and white ground indicate impacts concentrated on horizontal surfaces. On asphalt shingles, look for granule loss and dark spots along the windward edges. For metal panels and farm machinery, look for shallow dents and paint scuffs consistent with pea- to nickel-size impacts and occasional larger strikes.
