Mescalero, NM is experiencing an active multi-zone hail event beginning late afternoon on June 3, 2026, with radar-detected hail reaching a peak of 2.06 inches as the storm is tracking through the area.
Storm activity began in the late afternoon and continued into early morning hours. Dual-polarization radar issued the first hail detection at 2:09 PM MDT on June 3 for a 1.50-inch hail signature within the NWS warning area. A second radar-detected alert followed at 2:59 PM MDT for 1.23-inch hail as the cell intensified. The system weakened through early evening with a 1.03-inch radar-detected signature at 7:50 PM MDT.
After midnight the event persisted into adjacent warning areas. At 12:58 AM MDT on June 4 radar indicated 0.88-inch hail. Two later NWS warnings at 1:37 AM MDT and 1:57 AM MDT reported 0.88-inch and 0.75-inch hail respectively based on warning polygons rather than fresh dual-polarization radar detections. Storm activity is still developing and continuing to produce hail across Mescalero and nearby zones.
Six NWS alerts are associated with this aggregate report. Four alerts include dual-polarization radar detections. Two later alerts are NWS warning only and reflect the broader warning area as the system moves away from the core radar signatures.
Recorded hail sizes on the Mescalero track range from roughly three quarters of an inch to the larger radar-detected signatures recorded earlier in the event. Hail in the upper size range observed in this storm is capable of producing denting to passenger vehicles parked in exposed locations across Mescalero. Roofing materials with existing wear are at risk of granule loss and localized shingle fracture on homes in the town and on surrounding rural properties.
Smaller but still damaging hail reported in the overnight warning area can crack skylights, dent HVAC units on exposed rooftops, and damage vinyl siding where impact points concentrate. Expect concentrated impact patterns along the radar-detected hail swath through residential streets and open lots in and around Mescalero as the storm continues.
Safety first. Work is ongoing while conditions remain active. Confirm local NWS warnings and visual conditions before staging crews. Use personal protective equipment and avoid roof access while hail is falling or while surfaces remain slick from recent hail and rain.
For rapid response, prioritize photographic documentation of vehicle and roof impact points immediately after conditions allow. Tarping and temporary covers should focus on roofs showing displaced shingles, exposed underlayment, or missing granules. Inspect gutters, skylights, and outdoor HVAC equipment for dents and punctures. Maintain clear notes of measured hail sizes at impact points and keep timestamps tied to local NWS alert times for claims support.
