Rolla, KS experienced a multi-hour hail event on June 9, 2026, producing a maximum confirmed hail size of 2.54 inches and a sequence of warning-area alerts from mid-afternoon into late evening.
The event began in the mid-afternoon and persisted into the late evening. The first NWS warning-area alert for Rolla-KS was issued at 3:34 PM CDT, and the final alert in the sequence was issued at 10:52 PM CDT. A total of 34 NWS warning-area alerts were issued across the metro during the event. The majority of those alerts were issued as NWS warning only observations and reported hail in the 0.75 to 1.25 inch range.
Dual-polarization radar detected larger cores at several points. Radar indicated a 2.00-inch hail echo at 4:56 PM CDT and a 1.96-inch radar-detected echo at 5:41 PM CDT. A smaller radar-detected return was recorded near 6:40 PM CDT. Multiple warning-area alerts and intermittent radar-detected cores produced a discontinuous hail track across the Rolla metro before the storm concluded.
Reported and warning-area hail sizes during this event ranged from roughly 0.75 inch up through the event maximum. Hail in the 0.75 to 1.25 inch range commonly causes cosmetic damage to vehicle paint and can bruise asphalt shingles. Where hail reached or exceeded the 2-inch class during this event, expect dented vehicle panels, cracked skylights, and localized loss of roof granules or damaged siding.
Inspectors and adjusters operating in Rolla should prioritize vehicles parked outdoors along reported hail paths and residential roofing exposed on the storm-facing sides of structures. Photographs of dents, broken glass, and concentrated shingle loss tied to specific addresses will accelerate assessment. Note the temporal clustering of larger radar returns in the late afternoon when allocating field crews.
Begin with a targeted safety sweep. Secure loose materials, check for downed limbs, and verify that power remains off at damaged equipment before beginning repairs. Tarp and board services are advisable for properties with broken skylights or large roof openings. Use tarp measures that match the size of the opening and record dimensions for claims purposes.
Document damage with time-stamped photographs and a short written scope noting location on the property and observed materials affected. Prioritize complete roof inspections that record shingle type, approximate roof age, and evidence of concentrated hail impact. For vehicles, document multiple angles and include a scale reference. Provide concise repair estimates that separate temporary measures from full replacement costs.
