A hail storm tracked through Oakpark, VA on June 12, 2026, producing 1.64-inch hail and triggering repeated NWS warning areas from mid-afternoon into the night. The event concluded late on June 12 after a series of radar-detected hail cores moved across the metro area.
NWS issued 59 alerts for the Oakpark metro between 3:36 PM EDT and 11:55 PM EDT on June 12. Most alerts estimated 0.75-inch to 1-inch hail in the warning area. The final warning at 11:55 PM EDT estimated 0.88-inch hail within the NWS alert area. The majority of the alerts were labeled NWS warning only.
Dual-polarization radar returned persistent hail signatures along a corridor through the metro. Those radar returns intensified in discrete cores at multiple times after mid-afternoon. A trained spotter reported penny-size hail near Trevino and Championship Drive at 4:40 PM EDT. That spotter report aligns with a cluster of NWS alerts and radar hail echoes in the same neighborhood.
Storm activity continued into the evening with repeated warning area updates. Alert clusters between 5:10 PM and 6:30 PM EDT showed frequent 1.00-inch estimates in the NWS alert areas. After sunset, alerts shifted to predominantly 0.75-inch estimates before the final alert late in the evening.
Field reports to the NWS were limited to multiple spotter entries of penny-size hail at Trevino and Championship Drive at 4:40 PM EDT. No other local storm reports of structural damage or large-impact hail were recorded in the NWS feeds supplied for this event.
Radar-detected hail cores passed across residential sections of Oakpark identified in the NWS warning areas. No spotter-verified reports accompanied the larger radar-derived hail signatures later in the track. Where spotters observed penny-size hail, impacts are consistent with minor surface bruising to vegetation and small dents to exposed metal surfaces.
Insurance and repair teams should treat the Trevino and Championship Drive area as the first priority for field inspection because it contains the only spotter-verified surface observations tied to this storm. Expand inspections along the sequence of NWS warning areas issued between mid-afternoon and late evening to identify any additional localized damage that was not reported to the NWS.
Start inspections at Trevino and Championship Drive, where trained spotters recorded penny-size hail at 4:40 PM EDT. Photograph vehicles, siding, gutters, skylights, and roof valleys before any repairs. Use high-resolution close-ups and scale references for any dents or granule loss.
Next, work outward along the NWS warning area corridor identified between 3:36 PM and 11:55 PM EDT. Prioritize roofing systems aged over 10 years and asphalt shingles showing prior wear. On roofs, look for granular loss in shaded valleys, ripped or bruised shingle tabs, and hairline cracks in fiberglass skylights. On vehicles, inspect hoods, roofs, and trunk lids for dings consistent with pea- to penny-size impacts.
