What Happened

The event began in mid-afternoon with dual-polarization radar detecting small hail near Superior around 3:45 PM CDT and NWS warning-area activity issuing shortly afterward. Radar-detected hail returns intensified through the late afternoon and early evening. Multiple radar-derived hail detections and spotter reports clustered across the central city corridor and the Highway 9 corridor from about 4 PM to 6:30 PM CDT. NWS warning-area products were issued throughout the event, totaling 120 alerts across the Superior warning area.

Spotters provided multiple surface reports. A spotter network entry at 4:55 PM CDT recorded two-inch hail. At 5:39 PM CDT a Local Storm Report placed two-inch hail along Highway 9. Observers at 4:09 PM CDT reported hail covering the ground in central Superior. Another local report at 5:33 PM CDT noted 50–60 mph winds accompanying the hail core. Dual-polarization radar and NEXRAD hail detections showed repeated echoes consistent with large hail passing over the same corridors over multiple scans.

Damage Assessment

Field reports show surface accumulation and repeated impacts where the radar-detected core crossed populated corridors. Spotter-verified two-inch reports and eyewitness accounts of hail covering the ground in central Superior point to concentrated surface impacts in those locations. Social media and observer submissions at 6:25 PM CDT included additional 1.5-inch reports in the affected corridor, indicating pockets of heavy accumulation persisted into the evening.

Radar-derived hail detections line up with the spotter clusters through central Superior and adjacent sections of Highway 9. Observers on the ground recorded rapid hail growth in some cells; one report at 5:10 PM CDT described hail increasing from pea to quarter size over roughly 10 minutes before larger stones appeared. Separate spotter entries estimate repeated two-inch impacts at distinct points in the storm track, rather than a single isolated strike.

Reports of 50–60 mph winds near 5:33 PM CDT increase the likelihood of combined wind and hail impacts on vegetation and unsecured outdoor equipment in the same corridors. Field reports do not document widespread structural failures in the public Local Storm Reports, but they do document surface cover and multiple two-inch observations concentrated along Highway 9 and central Superior.
