A hail-producing thunderstorm tracked through Southgate, Michigan on June 14, 2026, producing stones up to 1.39 inches and triggering a long series of NWS warning polygons from midday into late evening. Radar-detected cores and a spotter submission during the early evening recorded surface hail within city limits.
NWS issued 79 warning polygons tied to this storm between 11:46 AM EDT and 11:16 PM EDT, with repeated hail size listings in the 0.75–1.25 inch range under the NWS warning only designation. Dual-polarization NEXRAD hail detection showed intermittent stronger returns, including a 0.93-inch radar signature at 4:25 PM EDT and a 1.5-inch radar signature at 8:53 PM EDT. Those radar signatures coincided with the most concentrated clusters of NWS warnings.
Field observation activity remained limited inside Southgate. An mPING spotter reported quarter-size hail at 7:24 PM EDT within the city. That spotter-verified report provides direct ground-truth for at least one late-evening hail pulse. Most other alerts across the event were NWS warning only entries without accompanying local storm reports.
The sequence shows a pattern of repeated, short-lived hail cores passing through Southgate from mid-afternoon into the early evening. The radar pattern and the string of warning polygons indicate the storm produced multiple discrete hail-producing updrafts rather than a single continuous hail swath.
Surface impact reports for Southgate are sparse. NWS Local Storm Reports do not list structural damage tied to this event. The only ground-truth submission within the city was the mPING quarter-size hail observation at 7:24 PM EDT. Radar returns near 8:53 PM EDT indicate a localized stronger core that passed near Southgate late in the event and may have produced larger stones in a confined area.
Given the limited field reports, observed effects in Southgate are likely to be localized. Areas exposed to the late-afternoon and early-evening cores should be prioritized for visual checks. Vehicles that were parked outdoors in Southgate between about 4 PM EDT and 9 PM EDT have the highest likelihood of denting or glass chips where cars were directly beneath the storm cores. Roof surfaces with older asphalt shingles are the most likely residential Roof type to show bruising or granule loss where stronger radar returns crossed the city.
No municipal-level reports of downed trees, widespread broken glass, or large-scale structural failures were received for Southgate in the Local Storm Report stream. Contractors should treat reported impacts as patchy and tied to the storm’s discrete cores rather than uniform across the entire city.
Plan inspections starting with properties that reported customer complaints or visible vehicle damage in the hours after the storm. Begin with exterior photographic documentation including close-ups and contextual images that show scale. For roofs, photograph shingle edges, valleys, and ridges; document granule loss and shingle bruising with a measurement reference. Note the inspection time and use timestamps on photographs. That sequence will support claims where the mPING spotter and radar signatures indicate intermittent stronger cores.

Try the Free Demo →For triage, prioritize older composition shingles and vinyl siding in neighborhoods along the storm’s likely path through Southgate during late afternoon into early evening. Check air-conditioning condensers, metal flashing, and skylights for pitting. On vehicles, inspect horizontal surfaces such as hoods, roofs, and trunk lids first. Where radar detected a 1.5-inch signature near 8:53 PM EDT, anticipate the possibility of localized larger impacts and escalate to full roof inspections for properties closest to that return.
Keep safety first. Use fall protection when climbing roofs that may be slick from residual moisture. Coordinate with homeowners about securing loose debris and covering exposed areas temporarily if inspection reveals compromised roofing. Record all findings in a systematic log keyed to street addresses and inspection times to match later insurance submissions.
