Lander, WY — June 20, 2026. Severe thunderstorms produced up to 1.72-inch hail across the Lander metro during late afternoon into early evening. The storm generated repeated NWS warning-area alerts and radar-detected hail signatures before concluding.
Nineteen NWS alert messages covered the event between 1:18 PM MDT and 7:52 PM MDT. The majority of NWS warning-area messages reported hail at roughly three-quarter-inch size. Dual-polarization radar flagged hail signatures at 2:15 PM MDT and 2:59 PM MDT in the mid-afternoon period. A stronger radar return occurred at 7:52 PM MDT. Several warning-area messages during the afternoon listed no hail in the immediate polygon at the time of issuance.
Alerts alternated between NWS warning-area reports and radar-detected hail signatures. The pattern showed repeated warning-area coverage across the Lander metro with concentrated radar returns late in the event. The storm has concluded.
Mid-afternoon detections in the three-quarter-inch range commonly produce cosmetic to moderate damage on exposed exterior surfaces in the Lander metro. Expect denting and paint chips on unprotected vehicles. Vinyl siding and soft exterior trim are at risk for pitting. Asphalt shingle granule loss and cracked edges typically appear where hail exceeds three-quarter-inch size.
The stronger radar returns late in the event increase the likelihood of more substantial impact. For properties with older or marginal roofing, check for cracked or split shingles, displaced granules, and damaged flashing. Skylights, solar panels, and exposed polycarbonate can show impact fractures even where shingles appear intact. Note concentrated damage along tree lines and open lots in and around the central Lander area.
Prioritize safety and documentation. Record the inspection date and local time, and capture high-resolution photos with a reference object or tape measure. Photograph the full roof, shingles at eaves and ridges, all skylights and solar arrays, and multiple vehicle panels. Log GPS coordinates for each property and note the wind and hail exposure direction when possible.
Start with non-invasive assessments for insurance intake. Look for granule loss, split shingle edges, fractured vents, and dent patterns on metal components. Use temporary covers where shingles are compromised and schedule a follow-up for any structural repairs. Inspect adjacent systems — gutters, window seals, HVAC housings — and flag potential secondary water intrusion points. Maintain clear notes on observations tied to the local inspection time.
