A severe hail storm tracked through Akron, CO late afternoon June 21 into the early hours of June 22, producing multi-inch stones and a prolonged sequence of radar-detected hail alerts across the metro.
The event generated 76 NWS alerts from the first dual-polarization radar detection at 1:53 PM MDT to the final radar call after 1:14 AM MDT the next morning. Dual-polarization radar flagged repeated 1.0–2.5-inch echoes through the late afternoon and evening, with several alerts also issued as NWS warning-only calls and multiple instances where radar detections matched spotter observations.
Around mid-afternoon, spotter-network messages logged large stones measured with calipers at 2:53 PM MDT and social-media posts with caliper photos were posted about 3:05 PM MDT. mPING submissions in the 2:43–2:53 PM MDT window recorded tennis-ball and hen-egg size classifications, while later mPING messages and social posts documented quarter- to golf-ball sized hail near Levant and northwest of Manter. A radar-plus-spotter verification was recorded at 3:03 PM MDT, and follow-up radar detections with spotter reports appeared intermittently through the evening.
The storm complex shifted slowly across the metro and into adjacent rural areas. Radar-derived detections clustered along a corridor running roughly from southwest of Akron through northern parts of Washington County and into northwest Kansas during the overnight period. Several larger radar-derived hail alerts appeared between mid-afternoon and late evening, coincident with the times and locations of the larger spotter measurements.
Field reports and imagery show a mixed damage pattern concentrated near Max, Levant, and northwest toward Manter. Spotter-network corrections at 2:53 PM MDT identified substantial stones near 12 NNW of Max. Social-media photos timestamped at 3:05 PM MDT included caliper measurements and clear photographic evidence of heavy surface impact on lawns and vehicles. mPING reports at 2:43 PM MDT and 3:20 PM MDT registered tennis-ball and ping-pong ball categories in the same corridor.
Later in the afternoon, text-message photo evidence documented quarter-sized hail in Levant at 4:49 PM MDT. Multiple mPING submissions around 6:35 PM MDT again recorded quarter-sized stones, indicating the storm produced both episodic large stones and longer stretches of smaller but still damaging hail. A social-media post near 8:48 PM MDT noted golf-ball sized hail northwest of Manter.
Radar imagery shows the path of largest returns aligned with these ground reports rather than confined to a single municipal boundary. Reported impacts include denting to vehicle panels and concentrated ground scouring in open areas where tennis-ball to hen-egg sized hail was reported. The mix of very large isolated stones and more widespread smaller hail suggests localized roof and vehicle damage pockets near the photo-verified locations and along the radar-detected corridor between Max, Akron, Levant, and northwest toward Manter.

Try the Free Demo →Inspect priority areas first. Start with properties along the reported track from 12 NNW Max through Akron toward Levant and northwest of Manter, where spotter measurements and photographic evidence indicate the largest stones and strongest surface impacts. Vehicles, metal outbuildings, and south- and west-facing roof slopes in those neighborhoods are most likely to show denting and shingle fractures.
Document everything on arrival. Collect time-stamped photos against a measured scale or with calipers when possible, and note the witness report times such as 2:53 PM MDT and 3:05 PM MDT for Max-area claims and 4:49 PM MDT for Levant. Where clients report only quarter- or golf-ball observations, perform a focused inspection of gutters, siding, skylights, and window seals; those elements were specifically mentioned in Levant and Manter submissions.
Plan for mixed repair needs. Expect isolated panels and roof sections with concentrated damage from larger stones and broader granule loss where smaller hail persisted. Triage urgent repairs for punctured membranes and shattered glazing. For estimates, separate line items for isolated large-stone impact repairs versus widespread shingle replacement in the storm corridor.
