A hail-producing storm tracked through Big Piney, WY on June 25, 2026, producing a peak radar-detected stone of 1.88 inches and a long series of NWS alerts from mid-morning into the evening.
The event generated 25 NWS alerts between 11:32 AM MDT (17:32 UTC) and 7:56 PM MDT (01:56 UTC next day). Most alerts were radar-detected hail reports from dual-polarization NEXRAD hail detection. Several alerts were issued as NWS warning-only entries. One alert at 5:54 PM MDT (23:54 UTC) combined radar detection with spotter verification and recorded a 1.41-inch signature.
Radar signatures began in the mid-morning and intensified through late morning and early afternoon. A cluster of radar-derived hail alerts occurred between roughly 1:12 PM and 3:00 PM, with spotters estimating hail around 2:40 PM MDT (20:40 UTC). Two spotters logged 1-inch hail at 2:40 PM, with the times estimated from radar. Spotter photographs at 5:39 PM MDT (23:39 UTC) documented quarter-sized hail in town.
Alerts continued into the early evening. The alert sequence shows multiple small pulses of hail-producing convection passing through the municipal area and its outskirts. NWS warning-only alerts appear intermittently in the stream of radar-detected alerts, indicating some warning polygons were not paired with immediate radar hail signatures but remained in effect for local threat management.
Field reports and local storm reports recorded hail impacts limited to hail strikes and photographic evidence. Two spotters reported 1-inch hail at 2:40 PM MDT (time estimated from radar). Two photo submissions at 5:39 PM MDT documented quarter-sized stones. The radar-plus-spotter entry at 5:54 PM recorded a larger radar signature with spotter corroboration near the same general corridor.
No NWS local storm report indicated structural failures, roof loss, or widespread vehicular denting tied to this event. Observations point to isolated surface impacts along the storm track through and just outside Big Piney. Where spotter photos exist, coverage was localized rather than continuous across the metro area. The combined radar record and spotter evidence indicate a defined hail swath that produced small to moderate stones in discrete pockets rather than uniform coverage across the whole municipal footprint.
Inspect roofs in the two primary time bands identified by reports – the early afternoon pulse around 2:40 PM MDT and the late-afternoon pulse near 5:30–6:00 PM MDT. Focus on shingles along windward eaves and on south- and west-facing slopes where localized hail impact concentrated in this event.
