A severe hail storm tracked through Bessemer, AL on July 1, 2026, producing stones up to 2.56 inches and prompting repeated NWS warnings and dual-polarization radar hail detections from mid-afternoon into early evening.
The event generated 42 NWS alerts between 12:42 PM CDT and 7:42 PM CDT as a multi-cell system moved across the metro. Dual-polarization radar detected multiple hail signatures during the run — notable radar-derived estimates included detections at 2:42 PM CDT, 4:33 PM CDT, 5:48 PM CDT, and 7:30 PM CDT. The alerts alternated between NWS warning-only messages and radar-detected hail estimates as cells strengthened and weakened along the track.
Spotters provided surface confirmation at multiple times. At 1:20 PM CDT a spotter reported quarter-size hail at NEACC. At 1:59 PM CDT another spotter reported a tree down on a power line with power out at 217 Reel Road. Around 3:06 PM CDT spotters reported quarter-size hail roughly 3 miles north of Haleyville. Those ground observations coincided with the window of repeated warning polygons and radar hail swaths across the regional corridor that includes the Bessemer metro.
Field reports show localized surface impacts rather than widespread structural collapse. The clearest recorded impact was a downed tree that struck a power line at 217 Reel Road, with power reported out at that location. Multiple spotter-verified quarter-size hail observations were reported near NEACC and north of Haleyville in the early to mid-afternoon period. Radar-detected hail signatures indicate larger stones were present within the storm environment along portions of the track, but public ground-truth reports documenting larger roof or vehicle damage were not recorded in the available spotter summaries.
Inspectors working in the affected corridor should treat the 217 Reel Road location as a confirmed hazard site because of the tree-on-line incident. In the NEACC and Haleyville report areas, expect cosmetic and small-object impacts consistent with quarter-size hail. Where radar showed stronger hail returns, prioritize visual checks for denting on metal components and localized shingle impact on roofs that face the storm track.
Start inspections at the specific addresses cited in spotter reports. The tree-on-line incident at 217 Reel Road creates two immediate priorities: assessing structural damage where the tree contacted property or infrastructure, and coordinating with the local utility before accessing areas with downed power lines. Document the power outage status and any visible conductor damage in photos before work begins.
When surveying roofs and exterior surfaces in the radar-affected corridor, look for concentrated shingle granule loss, split or bruised asphalt shingles, and dents in metal flashings, gutters, HVAC condenser covers, and vehicle panels. Take high-resolution photos with time and geolocation evidence. For claims tied to the NEACC and Haleyville spot locations, photograph surfaces on the windward sides of structures first, and note orientation relative to the storm track.

Try the Free Demo →Prioritize safety and routing. Heavy vegetation and downed limbs reported near 217 Reel Road raise access and ladder-stability concerns. Coordinate with property owners on temporary tarps only after confirming no live electrical hazard. Where radar indicated larger hail aloft, consider a second-pass inspection for hidden soft-wood damage and interior water stains that can appear after delayed leaks.
