A hail-producing storm tracked through Spencer, TN on July 3, 2026, producing 2.28-inch stones and intermittent pockets of quarter- to marble-size hail. The event unfolded across the afternoon into early evening and is now concluded.
This storm produced repeated hail alerts across the Spencer metro and neighboring counties from early afternoon into the night. Dual-polarization radar detected multiple intense cores in the 1.5-inch to 1.9-inch range during the mid- to late-afternoon period, and NWS warning-only alerts continued to outline the broader threat corridor into the evening. Radar-detected pockets recurred around mid-afternoon and again in the early evening, interspersed with shorter warning-only segments that expanded the NWS warning area.
Field observers supplied on-the-ground detail that aligns with the radar picture. At 2:43 PM CDT, amateur radio spotters reported quarter-size hail near the I-75 and TN 320 intersection in the Chattanooga area. Around 5:40 PM CDT a brief power loss was reported alongside hail activity. Two separate social-media posts near Clinton at 6:40 PM CDT described hail at least quarter size. mPING entries logged dime-sized hail at 6:19 PM CDT, and a local Facebook report placed marble-sized hail at Blair and Old Harriman at 5:52 PM CDT. These spotter-verified observations were distributed along the storm track indicated by the radar alerts.
The alert record shows alternating radar-detected and NWS warning-only segments through the afternoon and evening. Early radar detections appeared in the early afternoon and intensified again in the late afternoon and early evening before tapering off after 10:00 PM CDT. The combination of radar-detected cores and multiple spotter reports establishes both a broad warning area and discrete locations of measurable surface hail.
Surface impacts were localized and varied by neighborhood. Reports of quarter-size hail near the I-75/TN-320 corridor suggest vegetation stripping on exposed trees and isolated denting to parked vehicles along that route. The Facebook posts in Clinton indicate similar quarter-size impacts in residential yards and vehicles in that town. The marble-sized report at Blair and Old Harriman corresponds with a concentrated pocket that likely produced higher ground impacts near that intersection.
A brief power interruption at 5:40 PM CDT coincided with hail reporting in the same general area and indicates a localized infrastructure effect rather than a prolonged outage across the metro. mPING and spotter submissions repeatedly recorded dime to quarter-sized stones rather than a uniformly larger event; field reports contained no verified accounts of widespread roof loss or structural collapse. Contractors responding for initial triage should expect isolated hail dents to vehicles, hairline shingle bruising in windward exposures, and limb or leaf damage on unshielded trees located along the storm corridor.

Try the Free Demo →Priority inspection corridors are the I-75 and TN-320 corridor and the Clinton residential areas reported at 6:40 PM CDT. Start with south- and west-facing roof slopes and ridge caps in those neighborhoods. Look for shingle granule loss, check for soft-spot bruising along hip and ridge lines, and document any hail pitting on HVAC coils and condenser cages. Parked vehicles along I-75 and near Blair and Old Harriman should be photographed from multiple angles for dent documentation.
Document measurements and timing at the point of inspection. Use a calibrated ruler or hail pad for any remaining samples and note the report time to match the radar-detected cores. For claims triage, prioritize properties reporting concurrent power interruptions or multiple independent spotter reports. Vegetation damage can indicate hail intensity changes across short distances and is useful for locating higher-impact pockets during roof inspections.
For routing and scheduling, segment inspections along the radar-detected cores and the NWS warning area rather than treating the entire Spencer warning polygon as uniformly impacted. Digital photos with GPS timestamps will streamline desk review. For precise hail track points and paid damage zone mapping, consult the Strike Map product for a detailed, radar-derived hail track.
