A severe hail storm tracked through Peabody, KS on July 4, 2026, producing 3.89-inch stones and multiple radar-detected hail cores across the local warning area.
Storm activity began in the mid-morning with a series of NWS warning-only alerts for quarter-inch hail and continued as a long-duration hail-producing system. Alerts were issued repeatedly through the afternoon and into the overnight period, with the sequence intensifying in the late afternoon and early evening when dual-polarization NEXRAD detected several high-reflectivity cores moving through the Peabody metro area.
Around 4:30 PM CDT, spotters in the Peabody area sent photos comparing hail to a golf ball and reported 2.25-inch stones. Radar detections between 5:00 PM and 6:45 PM CDT registered multiple cores with measured sizes exceeding two inches. A spotter reported a 1.5-inch period of hail that began at 5:32 PM CDT and lasted roughly five minutes. Additional spotter-fed mPING reports logged half-dollar sized and quarter-sized stones during the late evening, centered on the 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM CDT window.
NWS warnings accounted for many of the earlier alerts through the afternoon. Later alerts included radar-detected hail cores and several radar-plus-spotter verified reports, indicating both remote sensing and ground observations identified larger stones as the storm progressed.
Field reports and submitted photos show concentrated surface impacts near the Peabody town area during the late afternoon and early evening timeframe. Two spotters at 4:30 PM CDT provided images showing stones compared to a golf ball. A spotter-verified observation at 5:32 PM CDT recorded sustained 1.5-inch hail for several minutes. Multiple mPING entries between 7:38 PM CDT and 10:27 PM CDT recorded half-dollar and quarter-size stones in residential areas.
Radar-derived hail detections align with the spotter locations, producing a mapped hail track that crosses populated parts of town during the 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM CDT period and resurfaces in the late evening. Reported observations reference intact photos rather than generalized damage claims. No centralized municipal damage assessment is included in these reports. Contractors and claims teams should treat the photo-backed spotter observations and the radar-detected cores as the primary indicators of where larger surface impacts were reported.
Prioritize inspections for properties along the radar-mapped hail track that intersects central Peabody and nearby residential streets noted by spotters at 4:30 PM CDT and 5:32 PM CDT. Begin external inspections at roof edges, HVAC units, and vehicle lots where photographic evidence was submitted. Use the spotter timestamps to sequence work: late afternoon impacts concentrated around 4:30 PM to 6:45 PM CDT, with additional localized reports through the evening into late night.

Try the Free Demo →Document each inspection with time-stamped photos and a brief notes log that ties findings to the published spotter times. For roofs, focus on shingle granule loss, depressions on metal panels, and denting on rooftop equipment in the areas where radar cores translated to surface reports. For vehicles, inspect painted surfaces and glass using the same location and time priorities.
Coordinate field crews to cover the highest-density report corridors first, then expand to adjacent blocks that fall inside the radar-derived hail track. Use spotter-verified photos as acceptance criteria when estimating hail size for individual properties.
