A severe hail storm tracked through Tiona, PA on July 4, 2026, producing up to 3-inch hail and multiple spotter-verified impacts in Bristol and New Britain. The event generated 55 NWS alerts between 2:43 PM and 9:53 PM EDT and concluded late evening.
NWS issued a series of alerts for this storm from 2:43 PM EDT through 9:53 PM EDT. Alerts ranged from NWS warning-only reports of 0.75–1.25-inch hail to dual-polarization radar detections that flagged larger targets. Early radar returns showed 1.28-inch detections in the mid-afternoon. The storm intensified in the early evening. Dual-polarization radar detected 1.72-inch hail at 7:02 PM EDT and 2.03-inch hail at 7:52 PM EDT. Two consecutive radar detections at 8:02 PM and 8:03 PM EDT registered 1.75-inch hail.
Spotter networks supplied the ground-truth observations that define peak impact. Multiple spotters in Bristol reported 3-inch hail at 7:50 PM EDT. Several additional spotter reports recorded golf ball–sized hail in the same 7:49–7:55 PM window. A New Britain amateur-radio relay reported golf ball–sized hail at 8:07 PM EDT. The temporal cluster of spotter reports corresponds with the radar-indicated intensification of the storm in the early evening.
Throughout the event many NWS warning-only alerts continued to report 0.75–1.0-inch hail, indicating intermittent pockets of smaller hail extending the storm’s footprint into late evening. The combined record shows a multi-hour hail-producing corridor with a concentrated early-evening peak centered on Bristol and nearby New Britain.
Local storm reports focus on hail-size observations rather than structured damage logs. Multiple spotter-verified 3-inch reports originated in Bristol at 7:50 PM EDT. Repeated golf ball–sized reports clustered around the same time in Bristol and between 7:49 PM and 8:07 PM in New Britain. Radar detections above 1.5 inches near those times support surface impact potential in those localities.
Field data do not include detailed, itemized claims or formal structural loss statements in the provided reports. Inspectors working in Bristol should expect concentrated impact along routes where spotters were active at 7:49–7:55 PM EDT. New Britain should be treated as a secondary concentration point based on the 8:07 PM EDT spotter relay. Vehicle panels, unprotected skylights, and exposed HVAC equipment in those neighborhoods are most likely to show the first visible signs of impact.
Start inspections in Bristol neighborhoods where six spotter entries recorded 3-inch hail at 7:50 PM EDT. Prioritize exterior roof inspections for broken or displaced shingles, dented gutters, and impact marks on fascia and vents. Photograph hail remnants next to a ruler or coin for size verification. For residential clients, inspect parked vehicles and detached structures first. For commercial properties, check rooftop mechanicals and solar arrays that were exposed during the 7:49–8:03 PM EDT window.

Try the Free Demo →In New Britain, crews should focus on areas with the 8:07 PM EDT amateur-radio report of golf ball–sized hail. Use binoculars and drone imagery where safe access is limited. Log exact street locations and times of inspection to align with the storm’s observed time cluster. When temporary repairs are required, document material choices and secure tarps to prevent secondary water intrusion until permanent repairs are scheduled.
Triage work by time-of-impact clusters. Assign rapid-response teams to Bristol for initial assessments, then rotate crews to New Britain and adjoining sections of the Tiona metro area where radar indicated smaller but persistent hail through late evening. Compile measurement photos and a site map for each inspected property to support insurance workflows.
