Orrum, NC experienced a multi-alert severe hail event on July 6, 2026, with peak stones reaching 1.4 inches in diameter. The storm moved through late afternoon into the evening and generated repeated NWS warnings and radar hail detections.
The event produced 15 separate NWS alerts across Orrum beginning in the mid-afternoon and continuing into the late evening. The first alert issued at 2:13 PM EDT reported 0.75-inch hail under a NWS warning only. Dual-polarization radar detected hail at 3:46 PM EDT with a 1.00-inch signature, and again at 4:24 PM EDT with a 1.28-inch radar signature. Additional NWS warning-only alerts followed at 4:02 PM, 5:14 PM (two alerts), 5:16 PM, 5:44 PM, 6:06 PM, 7:13 PM, 7:43 PM, 7:56 PM, 8:15 PM, 10:23 PM, and 10:49 PM EDT.
Radar-detected signatures are explicitly noted for the 3:46 PM and 4:24 PM alerts. The remaining alerts were issued as NWS warning only, indicating a watch or warning polygon covering the storm path without a corresponding radar hail signature listed in the alert text. The overall storm status is concluded.
Available alerts and radar returns indicate most hail detections clustered between about 0.75 inch and 1.28 inches, with the largest reported stone at 1.4 inches. Hail at and above roughly 1.0 inch commonly produces localized damage to vehicle bodywork, vinyl siding, and unprotected HVAC units. Roof shingles, particularly older asphalt shingles on south- and west-facing slopes, can lose granules and develop bruising at these sizes.
Stones near 1.4 inches increase the likelihood of denting on aluminum gutters, shutters, and metal roofing panels. Exterior glass is less frequently shattered at these sizes, but skylights and unshielded greenhouse glazing can crack if struck by larger stones. Expect concentrated impact along the radar-detected hail track and within the NWS warning area issued for Orrum.
Field teams should prioritize property triage by water exposure risk. Inspect roofs for granule loss, bruising, and displaced shingles; document with date-stamped photos and GPS coordinates. Photograph vehicle hail patterns and collect roof-test core samples where possible to demonstrate granule loss. Temporary tarps should be installed only where inspection confirms breached roofing underlayment or active water intrusion.
Focus repairs on storm-exposed sides of structures aligned with the radar-detected track. Check metal components for circular dents and siding for perforations or paint chipping. Coordinate with insurance adjusters and provide clear photographic evidence of hail diameter and distribution. Order a paid Strike Map to obtain the precise hail track and damage zone mapping for job-site prioritization.
