A severe hail storm tracked through Stanford, MT on July 16, 2026, producing 3.15-inch stones at the storm core and multiple radar- and spotter-driven alerts. The event produced a sequence of radar-detected hail cores and two spotter-verified surface observations in the Stanford area.
The National Weather Service issued 16 alerts for the Stanford warning area as this storm moved through late afternoon into the evening. Dual-polarization radar detected multiple hail cores, including a 2.7-inch radar detection at 6:38 PM MDT and a 2.04-inch radar detection at 8:07 PM MDT as the main storm complex intensified. Several intermediate radar detections were reported between mid-afternoon and late evening, and one alert circulated on NWS warning wording alone at 9:05 PM MDT.
A spotter relayed a hail observation via social media at 4:19 PM MDT and estimated 1.75-inch stones in the Stanford vicinity. Another spotter-verified report at 8:02 PM MDT recorded estimated 65 mph gusts alongside similar hail observations. Those surface reports coincided with radar signatures that shifted across multiple notification zones around Stanford during the event.
The storm evolved from isolated late-afternoon cells into a stronger cluster by early evening. Radar-detected hail cores re-formed and translated northeast through the warning area. NWS alerts alternated between radar-detected hail advisories and combined radar-plus-spotter updates as the event progressed.
Field reports indicate localized surface impacts concentrated near where spotters reported hail and strong gusts. The two observer reports from late afternoon and early evening are the only direct surface confirmations recorded in local storm report feeds for this event. Those reports described significant stone sizes and a period of strong, gusty winds around Stanford.
Radar detections show the largest reflectivity cores passed across multiple notification zones that include residential and agricultural parcels immediately surrounding downtown Stanford. Public storm report feeds did not include broad accounts of structural collapse or large-scale infrastructure loss tied to this event. Reported 65 mph gusts increase the risk of wind-driven damage to unsecured equipment and roofing materials in exposed areas near the storm track.
Where damage is being reported to insurers and municipal crews, the pattern is expected to align with the radar-derived hail cores and the two spotter locations. Confirmed breakage of glass, dented vehicles, and bruised roofing materials should be documented with timestamps and photos tied to local addresses for claims processing.
Inspect routes that align with the storm’s east-northeast translation through the Stanford warning area. Prioritize inspections on north- and east-facing roof slopes and on the windward sides of outbuildings. Document hail hits with date-and-time-stamped photos and include reference to the spotter observations at 4:19 PM MDT and 8:02 PM MDT when filing scopes of loss.

Try the Free Demo →Expect a mixed profile of damage across properties. Look for localized punctures, granule loss on asphalt shingle surfaces, and concentrated denting on metal roofs and farm equipment. Vehicles parked outdoors in the storm’s path may show rounded dents consistent with large stone impacts. Check irrigation equipment, exposed HVAC condensing units, and polycarbonate glazing on agricultural structures.
Factor wind when estimating repairs. Reported gusts near 65 mph increase the likelihood of wind-driven debris damage and may have dislodged weaker fasteners. Secure temporary tarps only after photographing pre-repair conditions and log the tarp placement time relative to the 8:02 PM MDT spotter report.
