Piñon, NM recorded radar-detected hail on July 20, 2026, with a peak stone of 1.58 inches in diameter. The multi-alert event produced three distinct NWS warning areas and concluded the same day.
A multi-cell storm moved across the Piñon metro on July 20. NWS issued three warning areas tied to NEXRAD hail detection. The sequence began at 12:59 PM MDT with radar-detected hail up to 1.30 inches. A follow-up alert at 1:43 PM MDT reported 1.02-inch hail. The final NWS alert at 3:21 PM MDT recorded the largest radar-detected stones at 1.58 inches. All three alerts were based on dual-polarization radar hail signatures and produced radar-derived hail points across multiple zones. The event concluded in the early evening; no active warnings remained after the late afternoon alert.
Hail ranged from about 1.0 to 1.58 inches across the affected warning areas. Stones near 1.0 inch typically dent vehicle body panels and cause localized loss of asphalt shingle granules. Hail approaching 1.6 inches can deform aluminum and thin-gauge metal roofing, fracture older asphalt shingles, and crack vulnerable skylight glazing. Solar arrays with microcracking or untempered glass are at elevated risk in impact locations along the radar-detected hail swath.
