A hail-producing storm moved through Britt, Iowa on July 20, 2026, producing stones up to 2.75 inches and a sequence of radar-detected and spotter-verified impacts in the late afternoon and early evening.
NWS warnings began in the mid-afternoon with a 1.0-inch warning issued at 2:46 PM CDT, followed by repeated warnings and radar detections through the evening. Dual-polarization NEXRAD indicated increasing hail intensity during the late afternoon, with multiple radar-derived detections over 1.5 inches by mid- to late-afternoon and recurring strong returns after sunset.
Observers on the ground reported large hail in two concentrated bursts late in the afternoon. At 5:07 PM CDT, multiple spotters reported 2.0-inch hail across the Britt area. At 5:19 PM CDT, five spotters recorded 2.0 to 2.5-inch stones and noted vehicle damage. Radar and spotter reports continued to show significant cores across the local NWS warning area through the early evening, with additional dual-polarization detections above 1.5 inches later in the night.
The event generated 34 NWS alerts spanning NWS-warning-only messages and radar-detected hail reports. The sequence shows an early moderate hail signal that intensified into several distinct high-reflectivity cores across Britt and nearby townships between late afternoon and early evening.
Field reports indicate concentrated vehicle damage in and around central Britt in the late-afternoon window. Five spotters at 5:19 PM CDT described vehicle damage after encountering 2.0 to 2.5-inch hail. Multiple spotters at 5:07 PM CDT reported 2.0-inch hail within a nearby corridor, and four observers at 5:15 PM CDT described golf-ball-size hail around 1.75 inches.
Local emergency and spotter narratives specifically cite denting and outer-surface damage to parked vehicles along residential streets and in public lots. The repeated, clustered nature of the 5:07 PM and 5:19 PM reports indicates a concentrated swath of higher-impact hail within the NWS warning area. Dual-polarization radar detected several additional cores later in the evening with radar-derived sizes above 1.5 inches, suggesting scattered pockets of significant impact outside the central damage cluster.
