Erie, PA – July 21, 2026: A multi-zone thunderstorm crossed the Erie metro from mid-morning into early evening, producing hail up to 1.5 inches and prompting 24 NWS warning updates.
The event began in mid-morning with the first NWS warning at 8:44 AM EDT for one-inch hail. Two follow-up warnings at 9:08 AM EDT and 9:58 AM EDT carried the same hail-size value. A midday warning at 11:45 AM EDT shifted to smaller hail reports. Activity resumed in the late afternoon and intensified through the early evening, with repeated NWS updates between 5:14 PM EDT and 7:58 PM EDT.
Twenty-four separate NWS alerts were issued for the Erie metro during the event. The alert stream included multiple entries listing 0.75-inch hail and several warnings that did not specify a hail size within the warning text. All issued NWS warnings are recorded as NWS warning only in the alert metadata. The storm is concluded for the Erie metro.
Most warning messages in the sequence indicated small-to-moderate hail sizes. Those patterns in the Erie metro are consistent with cosmetic and functional damage to exterior building materials and vehicles. Larger stones reported in the event can produce denting to vehicle panels, pockmarks and bruising to asphalt shingles, and broken skylights or cracked soft-metal flashing on older roofs.
Siding and older vinyl materials may show surface pitting across exposed elevations. Exterior mechanical equipment such as condensers and exposed piping can sustain bent fins and dents that reduce efficiency. Landscape and soft-surface damage is likely to be concentrated where the storm's heavier cores tracked through populated neighborhoods.
Begin with a safety-first site assessment. Confirm power to rooftop equipment is isolated before crews access wet or damaged surfaces. Prioritize inspections for vehicle fleets, asphalt and wood-shingle roofs, skylights, solar arrays, and outdoor HVAC units. Photograph damage with date-and-time metadata and capture broad views showing neighborhood context to establish hail patterns.
For repair planning, segment work by severity. Replace or fully recover panels and shingles when granule loss, cracking, or deformity is evident. Minor denting on metal surfaces can often be assessed for function versus full replacement. Prepare written estimates with scope lines tied to photographed impacts and coordinate claim submission timing with property owners and insurers. Maintain crew safety protocols for ladder work and slippery surfaces during post-storm conditions.
