A severe hail storm is tracking through West Salem, IL on July 26, 2026, producing 1.97-inch stones and generating repeated NWS warnings and radar detections. The event remains active and conditions may still be developing.
The storm produced a rapid sequence of 42 NWS alerts across the West Salem metro between 4:53 PM CDT on July 26 and 4:12 AM CDT on July 27. Early radar-detected cores included a dual-polarization radar signature at 5:13 PM CDT indicating 1.0-inch hail, followed by a larger radar return at 6:55 PM CDT indicating 1.3-inch hail. Most subsequent NWS warning-only updates reported reported hail sizes clustered between 0.75 and 0.88 inches as the system tracked through the metro.
A local spotter reported "a lot of quarter size hail" at 5:24 PM CDT, and the observation was logged as spotter-verified. That ground observation occurred while the storm was under active NWS warning coverage. Radar and NWS warning activity continued into the overnight hours, producing repeated warning-area updates across the west and central parts of the West Salem metro.
Ground reports remain limited. The spotter-verified observation at 5:24 PM CDT described widespread quarter-size stones in the immediate West Salem neighborhood noted by the reporter. No additional local storm reports of structural collapse or widespread roof failure have been recorded in the field reports available through the early-morning updates.
Dual-polarization radar cores later registered larger hail signatures, but field-level damage consistent with those larger radar detections has not been widely reported in the available spotter submissions. Photo-verified vehicle dents or layered roof granule loss have not been submitted in the verified local storm reports for the West Salem area as of the latest updates. NWS warning-area messages continued to cover sections of the metro where radar returned recurrent hail signatures.
Prioritize visual roof inspections in the neighborhoods around the spotter-verified location near central West Salem and along the axis of the warning-area updates. Look first for bruising along shingle shoulders, granular erosion concentrated on the windward sides of roofs, and isolated shingle fractures. Document all findings with time-stamped photos and a simple location note tied to addresses or GPS coordinates.
Inspect vehicles, soft-surfaced outbuildings, and exposed HVAC condenser units in the same zones noted above. Quarter-size impacts can dent aluminum trim and thin metal panels while producing localized shingle abrasion.
