A severe hail storm is tracking through Rocky Mount, VA on July 26–27, 2026, producing stones up to 2.52 inches and spotter-verified impacts across the region.
The event began with a sequence of NWS warning-area hail alerts starting at 8:32 PM EDT on July 26 and continuing through 4:05 AM EDT on July 27. A total of 28 NWS alerts covered the same general warning area. Early warning-area messages listed small-to-moderate hail reports between 0.75 and 1.0 inch. Around 10:09 PM EDT, dual-polarization NEXRAD returned stronger hail signatures consistent with larger stones. Subsequent radar detections after midnight included additional elevated hail signatures near the storm core.
Spotter and public reports are embedded in the live sequence. At 10:05 PM EDT, the Louisa 911 center reported golf-ball sized hail south of Louisa. At 10:30 PM EDT a trained spotter estimated 2-inch hail in Fredericks Hall and noted snapped treetops. At 10:52 PM EDT a delayed report recorded golf-ball sized hail in Chilesburg. On the Longwood University campus and nearby areas, observers reported quarter-size hail covering the ground with strong winds and power outages around 11:24 PM EDT. Additional public and mPING submissions recorded dime-sized accumulations later in the night.
The warning-area stream includes many NWS warning-only entries that lacked immediate ground verification. Several alerts were supported by radar-detected hail signatures and by spotter-verified reports at discrete times and locations. The storm is continuing to produce intermittent hail reports as it progresses through adjacent counties.
Field reports and radar detections show a mixed damage picture concentrated along the storm's track from Louisa County toward the Farmville and Longwood University corridors. Trained spotter observations from Fredericks Hall included snapped treetops at 10:30 PM EDT. The 911 report south of Louisa described golf-ball sized hail that is consistent with observed localized vegetation and vehicle exposure in that sector.
Observers at Longwood University reported hail covering the ground accompanied by strong winds and power outages shortly after 11:20 PM EDT. That combination of wind and surface hail corresponds with outage reports received from campus-adjacent areas. Delayed local reports from Chilesburg and public calls south of Farmville indicate isolated impacts on outdoor property and vehicle panels.
Smaller accumulations recorded by mPING and public submissions point to scattered, low-depth coverage in outlying zones. There are no widespread structural collapse reports in the incoming field reports. Damage is concentrated where spotters reported large stones and where radar-detected cores intersected populated corridors.
Inspect routes between Louisa, Fredericks Hall, Chilesburg, and the Longwood University area first. Prioritize roofs, siding, and exposed HVAC equipment on properties that reported outages or snapped tree limbs. Where spotters reported snapped treetops, check roof edges and gutters for impact punctures and concentrated granule loss. Photograph and GPS-tag all findings before making repairs.
