A severe hail-producing storm tracked through Faith, South Dakota on July 27, 2026, producing 2.46-inch stones and multiple radar-detected hail signatures across the late afternoon and early evening. The event generated seven NWS alerts spanning 4:16 PM CDT to 7:47 PM CDT and included both radar-detected hail returns and NWS warning-only polygons.
Early radar returns at 4:16 PM CDT indicated small hail aloft near the western edge of the Faith warning area, followed by an intensifying radar signal at 4:20 PM CDT. Radar-derived hail estimates increased again at 4:31 PM CDT. The NWS issued a warning-area polygon at 5:22 PM CDT that did not include a radar hail estimate. A Spotter Network observer along US-18 reported 0.75-inch hail at 5:23 PM CDT, with the report time adjusted by radar. A subsequent NWS warning-area alert at 5:33 PM CDT noted hail potential without a measured radar estimate. Radar returns later in the evening produced additional detections at 7:28 PM CDT and 7:47 PM CDT as the system moved east of Faith.
Radar-detected signatures and the spotter report together mapped a corridor of elevated hail probability through and just east of the town. NWS warning-area polygons covered the broader corridor during the period of highest returns. The sequence shows a period of growth in the late afternoon, a warning-area window in the early evening, and renewed radar-detected echoes later that night.
Field observations and radar returns indicate limited, localized surface impacts concentrated near US-18 and adjacent rural properties east of Faith. The Spotter Network report documents pea-to-dime-sized hail along US-18 at 5:23 PM CDT. No additional local storm reports of structural collapse, large-tree failure, or major roadway impacts were recorded in the immediate Faith area during this storm.
Radar reflectivity profiles show elevated hail aloft during the late-afternoon intensification and again during the late-evening echoes. Those profiles correspond to isolated surface reports rather than a continuous swath of widespread large-stone impacts.
