Vernon, AZ — July 27, 2026. A severe thunderstorm moved through the Vernon metro in the late afternoon and produced large, concentrated hail with a peak diameter of 2.2 inches.
The event unfolded in the late afternoon. The National Weather Service issued three hail alerts tied to the same storm cell. Alert 1 was issued July 27 at 2:48 PM MST (21:48 UTC) for radar-detected 1.84-inch hail. Alert 2 followed at 2:56 PM MST (21:56 UTC) for radar-detected 1.85-inch hail. A later radar alert at 4:16 PM MST (23:16 UTC) reported 1.41-inch hail.
All three alerts were based on dual-polarization NEXRAD radar signatures. The radar returns showed persistent hail cores as the cell traversed the Vernon warning areas. The alerts covered multiple adjacent warning polygons in the Vernon metro and surrounding rural parcels. The storm has concluded and no further warnings were issued after the 4:16 PM alert.
Hail observed by radar at these intensities commonly causes denting to vehicle panels and localized damage to rooftop materials.
