Green River, UT experienced a late-afternoon thunderstorm on July 29, 2026 that produced quarter-plus-inch hail and a short-lived but intense hail swath across the metro area. The event concluded in the early evening after a sequence of National Weather Service alerts.
The storm moved through Green River in the late afternoon and concluded by early evening. Two National Weather Service alerts covered the event: a 1.25-inch hail alert issued at 4:15 PM MDT and a 1.00-inch hail alert issued at 5:29 PM MDT. Both alerts were issued as NWS warning only. Dual-polarization radar detected strong returns consistent with hail signatures as the cells tracked northeast across the metro footprint. The storm produced a concentrated hail swath rather than widespread long-duration hail. Field observations and the sequence of NWS warnings indicate the most intense activity occurred between the two alerts in the late-afternoon window.
Hail ranged around quarter-inch to slightly over quarter-inch where the radar signatures peaked. Hail of this size commonly dents exposed vehicle bodywork and can bruise soft-surface landscaping such as young trees and garden plants. Asphalt shingles may show surface impact marks and granule loss on older roofs. Metal roofing, solar panels, and HVAC condensers are at risk for surface dents or cosmetic damage when struck directly.
Localized concentrations of impacts are likely where the stronger radar returns crossed developed areas in Green River. Property owners should expect scattered vehicle and exterior finish damage rather than uniform losses across the entire metro area. Photograph any visible damage and record locations and times for insurance and repair estimates.
Inspect roofs for shingle granule loss, split or bruised shingles, and displaced flashing. Prioritize older asphalt roofing and unprotected skylights. Check metal panels and exposed mechanical units for dents and compromised mounting. Document each finding with geotagged photos and a brief time-stamped note to correlate with the late-afternoon storm timeline.
For vehicle and exterior repairs, sort work by severity and accessibility. Tarp or secure vulnerable areas to prevent secondary water intrusion on damaged roofs. Obtain client authorization before performing temporary repairs. Provide repair estimates that separate cosmetic surface work from structural replacements. Maintain a log of inspections tied to specific addresses within the NWS warning area for claims support.
