Hastings, IA is being tracked by a hail-producing thunderstorm on Aug 4–5, 2026, with peak radar-detected hail of 2.37 inches. The storm is active and continuing to produce multiple hail signatures while moving through the metro.
Storm initiation began late Aug 4 and continued into the early hours of Aug 5. The NWS issued eight alerts for the system while it moved across Hastings. Early alerts were NWS warning only reports of quarter- to three-quarter-inch hail. Subsequent detections were identified by dual-polarization radar and showed increasing size before tapering.

Radar-derived detections indicate the storm intensified after midnight local time and produced the largest radar signature shortly before 1:00 AM. The system is continuing to move and may produce additional hail cores as it progresses through the metro.
Radar detections for this event range from roughly three-quarters of an inch up to just over two inches. Hail of this scale can produce panel dents on parked vehicles and concentrated damage on asphalt shingles. Localized shingle impact and broken glass are possible where cores were strongest.
There are no spotter-verified damage reports published yet for Hastings in this update. Ongoing radar signatures with multiple large-hail detections increase the chance of isolated property damage along the storm path. Inspect vehicles, skylights, and south- and west-facing roofing surfaces first in the immediate aftermath.
