Young, AZ — August 8, 2026. A concluded storm produced up to 2.2-inch hail across the Young metro area and generated multiple radar-detected hail alerts and an NWS warning area.
The storm moved through mid-afternoon into early evening, producing a sequence of six NWS alerts that covered the Young metro area. Alerts and detections:
The first five alerts included dual-polarization radar hail detections. The final alert was issued as a warning area without an accompanying radar-derived hail signature. The event is concluded and no active warnings remain for Young.
Hail sizes reported for this event ranged from 0.75 inch to the 2.2-inch maximum. Hail exceeding 2.0 inches can cause broken glass, significant vehicle body damage, and severe roofing impact where exposures are unprotected. Hail around 1.0 to 1.5 inches typically produces widespread vehicle denting, bruised asphalt shingles, and damaged exterior fixtures on outbuildings and agricultural equipment.
For properties in Young, priority inspection targets are parked and stored vehicles, asphalt shingle roofs, metal roofs with seam damage, skylights, and rooftop-mounted solar panels. Photographic documentation and measurements at or near the time of inspection will assist in distinguishing pre-existing wear from storm-related damage.
Begin with a safety-first roof survey. Use fall protection and confirm structures are safe before walking roofs. Photograph all damage with a visible scale and capture GPS coordinates and timestamps. Inspect attics for newly introduced daylight, check gutters and downspouts for shingle granule loss, and examine HVAC units and solar arrays for impact fractures. Record hail sizes where possible and note roof aspect and slope for prioritization.
Triage work by leak risk and occupant exposure. Temporary tarping is appropriate where water intrusion is imminent. For asphalt shingle systems, document granule loss and fractured tabs to support replacement vs repair decisions. For commercial metal roofs and solar installations, verify fasteners and module glass integrity before reinstalling equipment or applying permanent fixes. Coordinate documentation with property owners and their insurers.
