A severe hail storm tracked through Hartley, IA early on August 9, 2026, producing 2.5-inch stones and spotter-verified impacts before dawn.
The storm generated 12 NWS alerts between 2:49 AM CDT and 8:20 AM CDT. Dual-polarization radar first detected significant hail just before 3:00 AM CDT, with subsequent radar-detected returns and NWS-warning-only entries continuing into the morning. Radar-detected hail estimates ranged from under an inch up to radar returns indicative of large stones during the pre-dawn hours.
Spotters began posting observations near 4:19 AM CDT. Two social-media reports time-stamped to 4:19 AM were logged as spotter-verified. Shortly after, photo submissions received around 4:20 AM described and showed golf-ball–size hail in residential areas. A follow-up social-media report at 4:25 AM described additional accumulations in neighborhoods north of central Hartley. NWS warnings accompanied several of the later alerts during the 4:30–5:20 AM CDT window.
Radar-detected hail tracks and the timing of spotter uploads align tightly. The most concentrated field activity and photographic evidence occurred in a 10–20 minute window centered on the 4:19–4:25 AM CDT reports. Alerts before and after that window show the storm expanding and weakening over the next several hours, with the final NWS alert issued at 8:20 AM CDT.
Field reports and submitted photos show localized surface impact concentrated in and immediately surrounding Hartley during the pre-dawn surge. Spotter images show dense hail cover on lawns and streets in multiple residential blocks and clear photographic evidence of individual stones adjacent to vehicles and driveways. Social-media accounts provided the earliest ground-level observations that corresponded with the strongest radar returns.
The compiled local storm reports do not include widespread structural-failure claims in the dataset. Observations are primarily photographic and social-media descriptions documenting accumulation and individual stone size. Timing and clustering of reports place the highest-impact zone inside the town limits, with fewer reports from outlying rural roads during the event.
Inspectors arriving after daylight should expect melted accumulation in exposed areas. Photo evidence from spotters remains the primary ground-truth in this case. Use the photographic timestamps and reported coordinates to prioritize inspections and to correlate visible dent patterns with radar-derived hail swaths.
Prioritize inspections for properties in central Hartley and the nearest residential neighborhoods first. Focus on roofs, skylights, soffits, and siding where photographic reports show the greatest accumulation. Because the event occurred before sunrise, many properties will show surface water and melted hail; document dent patterns on metal, aluminum, and vehicle panels before any cleanup or yard work begins.

Try the Free Demo →Bring calibrated measurement tools and a clear size reference when documenting hail on site. Spotter photos described golf-ball–size stones; confirm maximum stone size on the ground where possible and record measurements with a timestamped photo next to a ruler or coin. Note clustered dent patterns on gutters and HVAC units and capture GPS coordinates for each inspection point.
Coordinate quickly with property owners to capture any remaining photographic evidence and to secure permission for rooftop access. For claims that rely on photographic timelines, preserve original image metadata and record the arrival time on site. When preparing estimates, reference the concentrated report window of 4:19–4:25 AM CDT and align field notes with the radar-detected swath for accurate scope assessment.
