Patagonia, AZ experienced a concluded hail-producing thunderstorm on August 10, 2026, producing up to 3.45-inch hail and multiple radar-detected alerts. The event began in the mid-afternoon and continued into the early hours of August 11.
The first NWS alert for hail in the Patagonia area issued at 2:20 PM MST. The alert sequence comprised 29 NWS alerts between 2:20 PM MST on August 10 and 2:00 AM MST on August 11. Fifteen alerts were flagged by dual-polarization radar or NEXRAD hail detection. Fourteen alerts were issued as NWS warning only.
Radar detections show evolving hail intensity through the evening. Early afternoon scans returned smaller hail signatures near 3:09 PM MST. Larger radar echoes appeared in the late afternoon and early evening. Notable radar-detected measurements include a 2.49-inch reading at 6:55 PM MST, a 1.74-inch reading at 6:12 PM MST, a 1.77-inch reading at 7:56 PM MST, and a 2.39-inch reading at 8:19 PM MST. Additional dual-polarization returns exceeded 1.5 inches between 9:23 PM MST and 9:55 PM MST as the system moved through the region.
Several warnings were NWS warning only, indicating observed or probable severe conditions reported without a concurrent radar hail signature. The sequence ended with a final NWS warning-only alert at 2:00 AM MST on August 11.
Radar-detected hail signatures above 1.5 inches were present across multiple passes over Patagonia and adjacent rural areas. Hail in that range commonly damages vehicle bodywork, shatters skylights, and can puncture soft roofing materials on unprotected structures. The late-afternoon and evening timing increased exposure for vehicles parked outdoors in commercial lots and residential driveways.
Repeated passes with hail echoes above one inch raise the likelihood of cumulative roof granule loss on asphalt shingles and denting on aluminum and sheet-metal equipment, including exposed HVAC units and solar array panels on ranch and residential properties. Inspectors and property owners in Patagonia should prioritize photographic documentation of denting, broken glass, and displaced shingles for claims and repairs.
Perform an initial visual survey from ground level focusing on vehicle clusters, solar arrays, skylights, and accessory structures. Record the location, photo time, and visible damage type. Avoid immediate ladder or roof work until loose debris and wet surfaces are cleared and local safety assessments confirm stable conditions.
For roofs, check for granule loss at eaves and valleys and for split or punctured membranes on low-slope roofing. For solar contractors, inspect modules for glass cracking and microfractures and log inverter fault codes that coincided with the event. Provide clients with a concise scope of visible damage, prioritized repairs, and estimates for temporary protections where warranted.
