Sidney, NE experienced a severe hail event in the early evening of August 10, 2026, producing a maximum hail size of 2.88 inches and a multi-alert, radar-detected storm track.
The storm moved through the Sidney warning area in a multi-stage sequence from late afternoon into early evening. NWS warnings first issued at 6:06 PM CDT and again at 6:14 PM CDT noted 1.00-inch hail potential and covered the initial warning area. Dual-polarization radar detected increasing hail sizes beginning at 6:19 PM CDT, when radar-derived hail estimates reached 1.44 inches. A later radar detection at 7:23 PM CDT indicated 1.25-inch stones in the storm envelope. The final radar-derived alert at 7:48 PM CDT registered 1.43-inch hail detections.
NWS warning-only alerts framed the early portion of the event. Subsequent dual-polarization radar detections tracked the storm's intensification and provided the primary evidence for larger hail within the warning area. The event is concluded.
Radar and warning reports mapped hail detections from roughly 1.0 inch to the larger radar-detected cores. Hail in the 1.0-to-1.5-inch range commonly produces denting to vehicle panels, pitting in glass, and visible impact marks on siding and soft roofing materials where stones fell within the Sidney warning area.
Stones from the storm core cause more severe damage. Where the hail track intersected developed parcels inside the warning area, expect widespread vehicle body dents, broken skylights or single-pane windows, and shingle fracture or displacement on asphalt roofs. Exterior soft materials such as vinyl siding and roof-mounted equipment are at elevated risk in the core swath mapped by radar.
Conduct roof and vehicle inspections as soon as conditions and safety allow. Prioritize photographic documentation of hail size, impact patterns, and exact addresses within the Sidney warning area. For roofing, inspect for granule loss, cracked or split shingles, and displaced flashing. Note that interior leaks can appear hours to days later; document attic conditions where safe access exists.
