A severe hail storm tracked through Winamac, Indiana on August 10–11, 2026, producing 2.45-inch stones and triggering an extended series of alerts. The event generated 71 NWS alerts across the Winamac warning area and persisted from late afternoon into the following morning.
Activity began with isolated NWS warning-only hail alerts on August 10, including an early 8:35 AM advisory. A cluster of warning-only alerts developed in the late afternoon and early evening, then intensified after 7:00 PM into a prolonged overnight episode. Dual-polarization radar flagged hail signatures several times between 8:24 PM on August 10 and 7:08 AM on August 11. Key radar-detected calls occurred late evening and again in the pre-dawn hours when the strongest radar returns were observed.
Local observers provided ground-truth during the event. Spotters in North Judson submitted photos showing hail just over 2 inches in diameter, with tape-measure images timestamped around 7:20–8:20 PM on August 10. A contributor identified as Matt Rudkin shared photos of a range of stone sizes, describing pieces from quarter size up to nearly Ping Pong ball size during the early morning period on August 11. Several mPING entries logged quarter- and half-inch reports overnight and in the morning, consistent with the mixed-size field observations.
Field reports and photos indicate concentrated surface impacts near North Judson and in populated corridors west and northwest of Winamac. Multiple spotter-verified photographs taken the evening of August 10 show individual stones measured at about 2.25 inches. Those images are collocated with NWS local storm reports filed for the same time window.
Radar-detected hail alerts through the night align with spotter-supplied imagery and mPING submissions that recorded quarter- and half-inch hail at distinct times. A photo-based report at 8:10 PM on August 10 documented quarter-sized hail, while mPING reports logged 0.5-inch stones at 10:08 PM and again at 4:05 AM. A spotter submission around 2:53 AM on August 11 included images of stones described as Ping Pong ball size to quarter size.
Observed impacts in the field reports were localized to addresses within the Winamac warning area and adjacent townships. Photographs showing tape-measure comparisons document individual stones large enough to cause localized cosmetic damage to vehicles and landscaping at specific addresses near North Judson. No broad, state-level damage assessments are included in the field submissions for this event; the submitted photos and mPING entries supply the primary surface-impact evidence.
Start inspections where spotter imagery originated. Prioritize properties in and immediately around North Judson, then expand to addresses along the radar-detected hail track through the Winamac warning area. Check timestamps on submitted reports — significant activity was recorded between about 7:20 PM on August 10 and the early morning hours of August 11 — to guide where to begin door-to-door canvassing.

Try the Free Demo →Document loss with dated photography and measurement. Capture at least two photographs per affected component: one showing context (roofline, vehicle, or yard) and one close-up with a ruler or tape measure beside the impact mark or hail fragment. Field reports in this event included tape-measure photos; matching that standard reduces back-and-forth during claims intake.
Focus initial physical checks on vehicle panels, exposed HVAC condensers, skylights, and siding on the windward-facing elevations at properties near North Judson. For roofs, prioritize asphalt shingles for granule loss and point impacts, and photograph any displaced or split shingles. For vehicles, record dent counts and locations and note any paint penetration.
Refer to the Strike Map for the precise hail track and paid damage-zone data.
