A severe hail storm tracked through Norway, Iowa on August 12, 2026, producing 2.72-inch stones and generating 67 NWS alerts from predawn into late evening. The event produced repeated dual-polarization radar detections and a small number of spotter-verified surface reports.
The storm sequence began before first light and continued intermittently through the afternoon into the evening. NWS alerts ran from 4:37 AM CDT to 10:04 PM CDT, totaling 67 separate advisories that included both radar-detected hail returns and NWS warning-only calls. Dual-polarization radar (NEXRAD) flagged elevated hail signatures in the early morning at 4:37 AM CDT and again at 5:25 AM CDT. Additional radar-detected hail echoes were logged mid-morning and during a late-afternoon pulse that produced several larger radar returns.
Spotters provided ground observations in the storm area. At 11:07 AM CDT a spotter reported dime-size hail on 250E near Warsaw. Two delayed spotter reports, logged at 5:53 AM CDT, noted half-inch stones. Those surface reports were localized relative to the larger radar hail track and are included in the consolidated event timeline.
Between the radar detections and the NWS warning-only alerts, the storm produced a complex sequence of cells that redeveloped and moved across the Norway region. Several alerts during the afternoon and early evening were labeled NWS warning only; others were tied to dual-polarization radar returns indicating significant hail aloft. The mix of radar-derived and warning-only alerts persisted through late evening as storms weakened.
Surface impact reports were limited and localized. The only spotter-observed hail in the field reports was on 250E near Warsaw at 11:07 AM CDT and two 5:53 AM CDT delayed half-inch reports. There are no field reports in the consolidated record of widespread structural or vehicle panel damage within Norway town limits tied to this event.
Radar-detected hail signatures crossed rural routes and pockets of settlement east and south of Norway. Those radar returns identify where large hail likely fell along the storm track, but ground-truth reports remain sparse and concentrated near the Warsaw/250E location. Any claims of roof or siding damage should be validated against exact property locations along the radar hail swath and compared to the timing of local radar returns.
Field-verified measurements are the primary basis for surface impact. For this event, the available spotter verifications show small, localized hail accumulation in the mid-morning band and before dawn. Contractors and adjusters should treat the radar hail track as probable impact area and use spotter times and locations to prioritize inspections.
Inspect roofs and vehicles first along 250E near Warsaw and on routes aligned with the late-afternoon radar returns. Start with photos keyed to GPS coordinates and time-stamped images. Record hail sizes observed on-site and cross-check them with the spotter times: the 11:07 AM CDT report for 250E and the two 5:53 AM CDT delayed reports. Those timestamps will help separate this event from unrelated hail in nearby storms.

Try the Free Demo →Focus initial roof inspections on shingle granule loss, bruised or split fiberglass shingles, and dented metal flashings on structures located along the radar hail track. For vehicle assessments, document panel dents and paint scoring with close-range photos and include distance-to-street and orientation notes. Use the radar-derived track to route canvass efforts, giving priority to properties directly under strong dual-polarization returns logged during the mid-morning and late-afternoon pulses.
Document every site with coordinates and arrival time. Flag any discrepancies between radar-derived hail locations and on-the-ground observations for secondary review. For precise hail track mapping and to delineate the damage zone for targeted inspections, consult the Strike Map for this event.
