Aguilar, CO experienced a concluded hail-producing storm on August 15, 2026, producing up to 2.52-inch hail during a late-afternoon into early-evening event. The storm generated a long sequence of radar detections and NWS warnings across the town.
The event produced 24 NWS alerts between 12:58 PM MDT and 7:05 PM MDT on August 15. The first alert occurred around 12:58 PM, and the final alert was issued at 7:05 PM. NEXRAD dual-polarization radar detected hail on 19 of those alerts. Five alerts were labeled NWS warning only with no accompanying radar hail detection.
Alert sizes reported by radar-detected scans rose through the afternoon. Smaller radar returns appeared in mid-afternoon, with more frequent and larger radar-detected signatures from roughly 4 PM into early evening. Notable radar-detected hail reports occurred in the late-afternoon to early-evening window, including multiple detections above 1.5 inches and several exceeding 2.0 inches near 6:30 PM to 7:05 PM MDT. The storm is concluded and no active warnings remain for Aguilar.
Hail reached a peak size of 2.52 inches within the storm track. Hail in the 1.5–2.5 inch range commonly causes punctures and cracks to asphalt shingles, sizable dents to vehicle body panels, and shattered single-pane skylights when exposure is direct. Hail above 2.0 inches poses a higher risk to siding, soft metal roofs, and unprotected glass.
Radar-detected returns indicate the heaviest hail potential was concentrated in the late-afternoon to early-evening corridor through Aguilar. Reported NWS warnings without radar detection suggest some areas received severe-wind or hail warnings that were not corroborated by dual-polarization scans. Field verification will determine the final footprint of hail damage and the distribution of larger stones across streets and neighborhoods.
Inspectors should prioritize vehicle lots, residential roofs installed before 2015, and exposed glass areas in the downtown and southside corridors. Start with a visual roof assessment from the ground, then use drone or ladder inspections where safe and permitted. Log hail sizes and exact locations during the first site visit. Photographs showing scale are essential for claims and repair estimates.
Expect mixed damage across short distances given the sequence of radar detections and intermittent NWS-warning-only alerts. Prepare for localized concentrated impacts where radar reported the largest returns near 6:30–7:05 PM MDT. Bring replacement materials matching existing roof types and plan for temporary tarping where through-penetrations or shattered skylights are found. Coordinate with vehicle owners for dent surveys and with property managers for expedited glass repairs.
