Norman, OK — August 16, 2026. A late-afternoon to early-evening thunderstorm produced peak hail to 1.79 inches across the metro area and produced localized severe hail impacts.
The storm developed over Cleveland County in the late afternoon and moved through Norman in the early evening. At 6:30 PM CDT the National Weather Service issued a warning area for 0.75-inch hail based on dual-polarization radar. Subsequent radar returns mapped a concentrated hail track through the single reporting zone. Observations and radar-derived mapping show larger hail occurred on a narrow corridor inside the warning area. The event concluded the same evening.
Hail reached roughly golf-ball diameter along the mapped track. Roof coverings with existing wear showed granule loss and isolated shingle fracture on initial field checks in southern and central Norman. Parked vehicles in exposed locations displayed denting on body panels and roof surfaces where hail struck directly. Vinyl siding and aluminum gutters reported cosmetic dents in several locations. Standard residential double-pane windows were largely intact in preliminary inspections. Skylights, sunroom glazing, and unprotected exterior mechanical components showed a higher incidence of impact damage.
Commercial metal roofing and exposed rooftop equipment recorded denting and fin damage consistent with impacts from larger hail. Landscaping and soft materials suffered foliage strip and branch damage in localized pockets. Reports of broken glass were limited to non-structural installations such as patio furniture and greenhouse panels.
Begin with a targeted visual inspection of properties inside the NWS warning area and along the radar-mapped track. Prioritize roofs more than 10 years old and those showing granule loss, edge curling, or exposed mat. Photograph all damage with timestamps and geotags. Record shingle counts, fracture patterns, and photos of dented vehicles and HVAC fins. Note the location relative to the mapped track for claim and repair planning.
For temporary repair, secure tarps only where decking or interior exposure exists. Protect HVAC condensers and rooftop units from further water intrusion and document compromised flashing and skylights. Avoid full replacement estimates until a close roof inspection confirms underlying deck or underlayment damage. Maintain safety protocols for loose granules on sloped surfaces and for handling damaged metal siding. Coordinate exact canvass and prioritization with insurers using the mapped hail track.
