A localized severe-hail event moved through Oneida, TN on August 17, 2026, producing up to 1.1-inch stones and generating multiple NWS alerts across the late afternoon and early evening.
NWS issued 33 alerts for the Oneida metro between 1:51 PM CDT and 7:21 PM CDT. Most alerts were NWS warning only. Dual-polarization radar (NEXRAD) detected hail signatures during two passes, including a notable radar-detected signature at 4:04 PM CDT.
The storm sequence began in the early afternoon and intensified into late afternoon. NWS warnings repeated at short intervals through early evening as the system lingered over the metro. At 4:20 PM CDT, three separate mPING submissions recorded quarter-size hail. Those spotter-verified entries coincide with the radar-detected signature earlier that hour. The mix of repeated NWS warning-only alerts and intermittent radar detections indicates a storm that produced localized surface hail in pockets rather than a continuous broad swath.
Local surface impact records consist primarily of the three mPING spotter entries at 4:20 PM CDT. Those reports documented quarter-size hail at separate locations within the Oneida area. No other Local Storm Reports in the dataset described vehicle, structural, or widespread tree damage for this event.
Radar returns show concentrated reflectivity spikes near the times of the spotter submissions, consistent with short-lived hail cores over populated portions of the metro. The NWS warning area covered a broader corridor than the spotter cluster. Field evidence for this event is therefore limited to the specific spotter locations and the radar-detected cores near 4:00–4:30 PM CDT.
Inspect properties in central Oneida where the three mPING reports originated and along the NWS warning area corridor issued between 1:51 PM CDT and 7:21 PM CDT. Begin with visible, easy-to-document surfaces: vehicle hoods and roofs, exposed HVAC units, metal flashing, and south-facing siding on low-rise structures. Take time-stamped photos with a reference scale. Note the 4:20 PM CDT spotter time on documentation to correlate with radar returns and NWS alerts.
Expect isolated dent patterns rather than uniform impact across entire neighborhoods. Prioritize panels and equipment most likely to show concentrated strikes. For roofing, focus on soft-surface granule loss, pinpoint bruising on asphalt shingles, and punctures on metal panels. For vehicles, document hail dimples with close-ups and include wide shots showing surrounding context.
Coordinate inspections with insurance adjusters using the NWS warning area as the bounding polygon for claim notices. Contractors should prepare separate estimates for discrete clusters of impact within the larger warning area. Use conservative triage for high-value exterior components and proceed to full replacement only after visual confirmation and measurements.
