Ellington, MO experienced a late-evening severe hail event on Aug 19, 2026, with radar-detected hail up to 2.0 inches. The storm moved through the area from late evening into the early morning and concluded by 3:28 AM CDT on Aug 20.
The event produced 43 NWS alerts between 9:16 PM CDT on Aug 19 and 3:28 AM CDT on Aug 20. Alerts began at 9:16 PM CDT and continued in a sequence of NWS warning-only notices and radar-derived hail detections through the early morning. Dual-polarization radar identified hail in eight alerts, including a 2.00-inch radar detection at 10:41 PM CDT and multiple 1.75-inch radar returns at 9:51 PM CDT and 10:22 PM CDT. Other radar-detected sizes ranged from 1.08 inches down to 0.75 inches. The remaining alerts were NWS warning-only entries reporting 1.0 inch and smaller estimates or zero-hail messages tied to changing storm signatures. The storm concluded at 3:28 AM CDT on Aug 20.
Radar detected a peak hail diameter of 2.00 inches at 10:41 PM CDT. Hail of that diameter commonly causes visible denting to metal surfaces and significant damage to unprotected vehicle panels. Within the Ellington area, expect asphalt shingle loss, bruised or broken fiberglass and vinyl siding, and potential broken glass where hail concentrated. Radar returns also indicated repeated pulses of 1.5 to 1.75-inch hail in late evening, increasing the likelihood of cumulative roof and siding damage along the storm path.
Local, ground-truth confirmation is required to classify losses for insurance or repair. Use the radar-detected time windows and the sequence of NWS warning-only and dual-polarization detections to prioritize inspections from locations closest to the 10:41 PM CDT radar detection outward along the mapped track.
Start inspections by documenting vehicle and roof conditions with time-stamped photos and GPS coordinates. Prioritize properties with exposed metal, thin-profile shingles, or vehicles parked outdoors during the late-evening time window. For roofing, check for granule loss, split or fractured shingle tabs, and exposed underlayment; record measurements and approximate hail diameter where possible. For siding and exterior trim, focus on dents in aluminum, punctures in vinyl, and cracked windows that align with the radar-detected hail intervals around 9:50–10:45 PM CDT.
Plan temporary covers for compromised roofs and schedule detailed assessments where multiple radar hits occurred. Use the sequence of NWS warning-only alerts to corroborate locations with lower radar confidence before committing to full repairs. For precise alleyway-level routing of inspections, reference the paid Strike Map for the event to obtain the radar-derived hail track and the damage zone mapping.
