A severe hail storm tracked through Portland, Arkansas, on August 20, 2026, producing 2.6-inch hail and multiple radar-detected hail cores across the metro. The event moved through late afternoon into the evening and generated 25 NWS alerts.
The first NWS alert for the Portland metro issued at 4:03 PM CDT and warned of 1-inch hail under an NWS warning only product. Alerts continued through 9:18 PM CDT, with a mix of NWS-warning-only notices and dual-polarization radar detections. Dual-polarization radar identified intensifying hail cores at 4:14 PM (1.18 inch), 4:38 PM (1.21 inch), 4:58 PM (1.51 inch), 5:09 PM (2.20 inch), 6:13 PM (2.23 inch), and additional strong returns after 8:00 PM.
A spotter-verified media photo and observer report placed quarter-sized hail at the Warren County Club around 4:55 PM CDT; radar analysis was used to estimate the observation time. The storm produced multiple hail cores that crossed the Portland metro corridor in a roughly west-to-east progression, with renewed intense returns during the late-evening period. Several NWS alerts were issued without concurrent radar hail signatures, indicating periods when warnings relied on storm reports and storm motion rather than radar-derived cores.
Official surface impact reports were limited. The only NWS local storm report tied to this event documented quarter-sized hail at the Warren County Club near the reported 4:55 PM CDT timeframe. No additional NWS local storm reports were filed for other Portland locations in the public record for this event.
Dual-polarization radar shows multiple concentrated hail cores crossing populated parts of the metro from late afternoon into the evening. Field crews and adjusters should treat properties beneath those radar cores as higher priority for inspection, even where no local storm reports exist. Where media or resident photos are available, preserve originals with timestamps and location metadata to support claims and inspections.
Prioritize inspections inside the NWS warning area and along the radar-identified hail track through the Portland metro. Start with the Warren County Club area and adjacent addresses reported near 4:55 PM CDT. For vehicles, photograph all sides with a scale reference and record vehicle identification numbers and license plates. For roofing, document shingle impact impressions, granule loss, and any exposed underlayment with time-stamped photos. Note slope orientation and elevation when logging observations.
When assessing siding, outdoor HVAC units, and soft metals, look for pitting and punctures concentrated on windward faces. Avoid destructive testing on live claims; use magnetic shingle lifts or small probe checks only when necessary to confirm through-penetration. Apply temporary tarps only to actively leaking roofs or where interior exposures exist. Keep a running log of addresses inspected, work performed, and immediate remediation actions.
