A severe hail storm tracked through Oral, South Dakota on August 21, 2026, producing 4.28-inch stones at peak and multiple radar-detected hail cores across the metro. The episode spanned late afternoon into the late evening and concluded the same night.
NWS issued 22 alerts for the Oral, SD metro between 4:13 PM CDT and 10:58 PM CDT on August 21. Early radar detections began at 4:13 PM CDT with smaller hail estimates over the southwest fringe of the metro. By 5:03 PM CDT a strong radar core produced a multi-inch radar estimate northeast of that initial cell. Throughout the evening dual-polarization NEXRAD returned repeated hail signatures, including notable radar-derived cores near 5:41 PM, 8:34 PM, and 9:19 PM CDT. Three updates in the sequence were NWS-warning-only messages rather than radar-derived hail estimates.
A spotter-verified public photo taken at 8:04 PM CDT shows 3-inch hail collected just east of Moomaws. That ground observation aligns with the late-evening run of radar-detected cores that passed over the same corridor. Alerts later in the evening trended smaller in estimated stone diameter as the storm moved northeast and weakened prior to 11:00 PM CDT.
Ground-truth in the record is limited to a spotter-verified photograph of 3-inch hail east of Moomaws at 8:04 PM CDT. Radar detections show repeated hail cores crossing the Oral metro along a roughly southwest-to-northeast axis, concentrating the surface impact corridor through the same area where the spotter photo originated. NWS warning polygons tracked along that corridor during the evening alert sequence.
No additional local storm reports are recorded in the provided dataset for other parts of the metro. Field evidence therefore indicates the most pronounced surface impacts near Moomaws and along the radar-aligned swath that includes the spotter location. Observers and property owners along that corridor should expect localized, high-magnitude hail exposure centered on the mapped track and the immediate vicinity of the spotter photo.
Inspect properties east of Moomaws first. Start with roofing, skylights, and rooftop-mounted equipment positioned in the immediate corridor of the 8:04 PM CDT observation and adjacent addresses inside the NWS warning polygon path. Use close-up photographs and soft-tap tests on shingles to document potential granule loss and impact signatures. Record GPS-tagged photos to link evidence to the radar-aligned track.
For vehicles and low-profile assets, prioritize fleet yards, commercial parking near Moomaws, and residential streets inside the radar-identified swath. Where the 3-inch spotter photo was taken, check for panel dents, cracked glass, and metal fatigue on exposed surfaces. Coordinate triage by proximity to the photographed location and by whether properties lie inside consecutive radar cores during the evening sequence.
