A hail storm tracked through Gainesville, Missouri, on August 22, 2026, producing 2.47-inch stones and prompting 55 NWS alerts across the metro. The event ran from mid-afternoon into early night and included multiple radar-detected hail cores and spotter-verified surface reports.
NWS issued 55 alerts for the Gainesville metro between 1:43 PM CDT and 9:48 PM CDT on August 22. Dual-polarization radar detections occurred repeatedly, with notable radar hail signatures including a 2.28-inch return at 5:29 PM CDT and several 1-inch-plus returns through the late afternoon and early evening. Many alerts were NWS warning only; others were explicitly radar-detected or spotter-verified.
Field reports identified surface hail in multiple places along the track. A local fire department relayed a 1-inch hail report around 2:37 PM CDT. Social media photos from Drasco, time-estimated from radar near 3:00 PM CDT, showed hail near 1 inch. At 6:25 PM CDT, an observer in Stantonville reported quarter-size hail. These spotter-verified items align with the radar pattern of intermittent, intense cores moving through the area.
The sequence shows repeated storm redevelopment over the same corridor. Early afternoon radar detections around 1:43 PM CDT registered sub-inch hail signatures before intensification later in the afternoon. The most intense radar returns clustered between roughly 5:00 PM CDT and 6:30 PM CDT, when multiple dual-polarization detections of 1.2 to 2.3 inches were recorded.
Surface reports and radar signatures indicate localized impact concentrated near Drasco and along the corridor through Gainesville toward Stantonville. Spotter-verified images from Drasco and a relayed fire department report near 2:37 PM CDT document repeated 1-inch hail impacts in that area. The Stantonville observer reported quarter-size hail at 6:25 PM CDT, consistent with a weakening echo on radar at that time.
No large, path-wide structural damage is described in the field reports. Photographs attributed to Drasco show pavement and vehicle surface impacts typical of 1-inch stones, including denting and broken window risk for exposed vehicles. The timing and clustering of radar-detected 1.0–2.3-inch cores over a roughly 90-minute window make property exposure uneven across the metro. Inspectors arriving on site should expect concentrated impact on north- and west-facing panels where strikes occurred during the stronger reflectivity cores.
Recorded spotter notes and the spatial pattern of radar cores support a mixed damage outcome: localized vehicle dents and cosmetic roofing damage in areas with repeated 1-inch reports; minimal evidence of large-scale shingle blow-off or wholesale structural collapse in the supplied field reports.
Prioritize inspections in Drasco and properties along the radar track between Gainesville and Stantonville. Start with vehicle surveys and exposed metal surfaces where photo evidence and the 2:28 PM–6:30 PM CDT radar window indicate repeated impacts. For residential roofs within the primary track, check ridges, hips, and south-facing slopes first; those surfaces logged the highest frequency of large-return radar echoes and match spotter locations.

Try the Free Demo →Document condition with time-stamped photos and note the location relative to the radar track and the spotter times provided – for example, the Drasco social media pictures near 3:00 PM CDT and the Stantonville quarter-size report at 6:25 PM CDT. Triage claims by exposure: vehicles with paint punctures or concentrated denting, asphalt shingle granule loss on multiple adjacent fields, and damaged siding where impacts are clustered.
Plan short inspections first and full estimates second. Materials can show latent defects from sub-inch to 1-inch impacts that escalate when several rounds of hail struck the same surface. Coordinate with property owners to capture pre-repair evidence and advise on temporary tarps only where active leaks are documented.
